I had the same setup as you (comcast and HD ready TV), and I got HDTV this past summer. Let me tell you it is amazing. I can't imagine going back. To my knowledge, you will only be able to receive the channels if you order from Comcast.
I don't know how it works for sure when you buy your own receiver, but I believe the service still needs to be activated through your cable. I would recommend just doing everything through Comcast. If the pricing is the same on the east coast as it is out here, it is really quite reasonable. We got the HDTV box with DVR included for only 6 bucks extra a month...a great deal if you ask me. We were not even aware the DVR was included, but I am glad it was. I think I like that better than the HDTV! Although this might not have entirely answered your question, hopefully it was helpful. Even if it does work with your own receiver, I would just get it from Comcast. Reasonable fee and you get the DVR+HDTV in one box. Good luck on the transition! |

You can also get HD channels through an antenna. I get all my HD channels through a regular antenna up in the attic. I get CBS, NBC, ABC, and Fox in HD. There are also about six different PBS stations that come through and some of them are in HD.
I also have basic cable, but I'm thinking of cancelling it because I don't watch it very much. If you watch a lot of TV, you'll probably need a cable setup, but if you're like me and don't watch very much, you may want to try it. |
