I am looking for lets say 5 strong impromptu effects that is not card magic. I know I could search and find stuff but if you had five impromptu effects to perform what would they be. I guess the stuff that you actually use and gets good reactions. Ive been all card magic and am looking to widen my material. Thanks for replies.

The absolute strongest impromptu card effect that I know (the only restriction is the cards have to be bordered) is Las Vegas Leaper....AND it doesn't involve the old "pick a card/find a card" crap that most people are expecting. There are a couple different handlings of this, so you can pick and choose which moves to use. You can learn a lot about this by watching some of the old "Stars of Magic" tapes with Paul Harris, and comparing moves with what's in his older books and AOA.

Themartyr,
That is a very difficult question as we all have different personalities and preferences. I think that a very good investment for you would be Martin Gardner's Encyclopedia of Impromptu Magic. Thousands of bits and brain tweakers in this tome. Peace, Parson

1. "Coins Across" many variations.
2. Impromptu Pen thru borrowed dollar. 3. Coin in pen cap. 4. "$100 Bill Switch" It's only impromptu to the audience. 5. Roth's "Hanging Coins" w/ U.S. Quarters. "Twisting Arm Illusion". I don't use it but it's cool..My wrists are not that flexible. A lot depends on what's available at the time. In work it's different than if I'm home or out to dinner. The ones I mention are good for me, any time. |

1:Sponge Balls or Bunnies(believe it or not bunnies get the best reaction)
2:Scotch and Soda (50 centavo) 3:Polaroid Money (Himber Wallet by Loraine) 4:Finger Chopper(Gets a laugh with the right patter) 5:Color Change Silks (die tube with teach a trick/sucker trick ending) This all fits in my pockets and I performed them two weeks ago over and over for the opening of the new mall here in memphis called The Avenue. |

With a little thought, you can have 15-20 minutes (easily) worth of material anywhere you go. Just think about what is usually found while out. Napkins, office supplies, rubber bands, keys, coins, money (bills), etc... By learning a few simple effects using common items you might run into, you'll be set and not have to carry anything with you. Some examples might be:
Crazy Mans Handcuffs (Michael Ammar) - anything with rubber bands Jumping toothpick - found all over Starcle (Dan Harlan) or Napkin Rose - napkins are everywhere pen through bill - both can be borrowed (and vanished) coin matrix or vanishes - coins are everywhere Spirit (turnover) key - carry skeleton key in your pocket when you leave the house Blister - carry a small washer and matches matchbook / match effects - can be found everywhere In addition to the Martin Gardner book mentioned above, you might also look into Greg Wilson's "On The Spot" or "Off The Cuff" videos as well as videos from Dan Harlan, Jay Sankey, Daryl and Michael Ammar. Also consider some mentalism and your only limited by your imagination and how much you can remember. By studying some of these magicians and thinking about what you normally run into on a daily basis, you'll get some great material to work with that will knock them out! Good luck. |

The arm twisting illusion is great as a strong impromtu (combined with some other effects like the one found in Body Morphin by Andrew Mayne)
I do a nice 3-4minute routine with a french drop and a coin A mental effect employ the one-ahead principle among others Tic Tacs from eye, nose (Geek Magic DVD) And lastly, I can balance nearly anything on my chin within a certain weight limit. Now I know it's really not magical, but is really impressive. |

Ive only been in magic now for like 3 months and I'm trying to expand my stuff so I am always ready to do something no matter the situation. I know this will take time so I figure why not start now. I will look into your suggestions. Thanks All!
