"Pianist Billy Penrose used to entertain his colleagues by eating razor blades. As an encore he would push a huge safety pin through his cheek into his mouth and fasten it there."
Any idea how to accomplish that effect or if it's marketed? Not the painful way anyway.

I have never seen a marketed effect, and the only way I know of is to really stick a pin through your cheek. I used to do it when I was willing to try such things, and it doesn't really hurt, but the sensation that you feel when the pin actually penetrates I found definitely unpleasant. The only way I can describe it is "squeeky." Yeah, I know, that sounds ridiculous. You push gradually harder and harder until the pin suddenly goes "squeek" through your skin.
Pushing a pin through the cheek isn't hard. Right in the center of the cheek the flesh is thin and apparent lacking in large blood vessels. Pain receptors are few, too. A safety pin large enough to close once it is through your cheek is a bit too large for me. I did it with straight pins which are much smaller in diameter. Now I leave such things to others. Geez, nowadays people do such stuff to look "cute!"

Did it once in college to prove a point (pun intended)... I was having a heated argument with a psych teacher who insisted that the Indian swamis were going into a deep trance when doing such things. I said there was no need to do that and she kind of said prove it. The next class session I came in with a large hatpin, sucked in my breath and said, "Am I meditating now" as I sort of laughed in her face and pressed the pin through. Not much pain... it was mostly a weird sensation and an inner horror of realizing what I was doing.
If I remember correctly there was only a drop of blood or two when I pulled it out. Won't be doing that again any time soon. Greg

Since I can't help but get the feeling that someone reading this thread will figure that this ain't so bad and go do it, let's also emphasize hygiene here - make sure the pin is sterile as can be, and clean that wound !!
What did you guys do once you pulled the pin out ? The trance thing reminds me of a special on Houdini I just saw on Halloween night, where he beat a fakir's record of staying in an underwater coffin or something like that. Doctor's told Houdini he had 5 minutes of air to breathe; he stayed there for an hour and a half - no trance involved, just calm control.
Just hanging out with the rest of my fellow dregs.

Mystician, a shot or two or three of whiskey serves to (1) sterilize the pin and the cheek, (2) dull the pain, and (3) raise the courage level about three notches.
"What did you guys do once you pulled the pin out ?" I don't know about anyone else, but once I pulled the pin out I always thought to myself, "That was pretty stupid. Why on earth did you do that AGAIN? Next time don't drink so much!" Seriously, as Mystician says, if you insist on trying this, MAKE SURE you sterilize the pin and the skin of your cheek. The wound is tiny, but it is a puncture wound. When you think about it, though, it is not as bad as even ear piercing, and I understand people used to stick a BROOM STRAW through the ear lobe to keep the hole open! Talk about unsanitary!

LOL just trying to have an image of that. You performing and effect that scares you as much as it does them. It would be funny to see from our point.

And, paisa23, I can't stand the thought of body piercing or getting a tattoo. My youngest son has several piercings and a tattoo on the back of his neck. It all gives me the willies!

Well, you would have to be very careful in the handling, but I have seen a gag item for safety pin through the finger type stuff- think arrow through the head, only smaller, for the squeamish anyway!

I once did a nose piercing gag. It was totally gross and funny all at the same time. I told the audience I was going to put a nail through my nose, but first I had to clean the nail and then I had to clean my nose before I proceeded.
So I sanitized the nail in a flame, and then took a handkerchief to blow my nose. The handkerchief comes away and these is a gob of snot hanging down from one nostril, which I pretend not to see until it is pointed out to me. I pull on it and it gets longer but doesn't come out. Then I do the old nostril pinch thing to try to blow it out, but the result is that another gob is now hanging out of my other nostril. I pull on the short gob, and the short gob gets longer, while the long gob gets shorter.... you guessed it! Chinese nose sticks! Grotesque and hysterically funny once they catch on that it's a trick. My ending was weak. Maybe I should bring it back and work on it some more.
