Gems usually is just refering to something being a good trick. Just another way of putting it (sinces gems are rare stones, it is saying here is a good trick). Can also refer to a gem of information, again the same sort of thing...simply put it means good or useful.
Packet trick, is just meaning a trick which does not use a whole deck of cards. Colour monte is an example of a packet trick. |

"Gems"
Precious stones or jewels. Books may have some small thinks in them that are of great value but often overlooked. "Packet Trick" A trick done with only a few cards. The cards may be normal or specially printed. The trick may be a marketed one or use a few cards from a regular deck. |

Jaz said it all. I also refer to a packet trick not always as a card trick but a sole trick usually implying the use of some gaff. Gaff meaning a secret gimmick of some sort. 'Back in the day' packet tricks were apparently the big thing. Even marketing Dai Vernons, "Twisting Aces"- a routine needing no gaff, only handling. Some of the other 'older' gents here could probably fill you in more. In my opinion a packet trick in todays society would be: "Aces in their Faces" or even "Daryl's Three Fly" trick.

Spycrapper,
So glad that you are here. Here in the States, we have a lot of little word plays. Some of them are "gems," some are not. Anytime you have a question, just ask. Peace, Parson

I would go a step further. If a trick is a gem, it is notonly good, but something you treasure very much, like a little gold coin....

Calexa,
How very right you are. And it might be good to note that what are "gems" for me might not be so precious to someone els. Peace, Parson

I think I know what you mean, Parson... my favorite trick (my 'gems') is my friend's garbage trick...
I will ask again when I get another *strange* word for me... thank you all |

This has gotten me thinking... Has anyone ever written and produced an Encyclopedia of Magic Terms? That could be a cool thing to have.

Don't be afraid to ask here if you have any other words or terms you're unsure of.
