I have a vast collection of Books to do with card tricks and mentalism, but always read about "lecture notes" and the like. Having never been or tried to find out properly about going to some lectures I had a few questions for any lecturers or lecturees.

Can anyone go to these lectures? (UK based)

What is the best way of finding out where they are?

What kind of knowledge do they give?

Are they worth while?

Thanks a lot for your help

Most lectures are based in and around magic clubs. Most clubs allow non-members to attend the lectures, but usually charge a fee.

As an example, tonight in Cambridge UK The Pentacle Club lecture is by Keith Bennett, the Birmingham-based magician and dealer. This year we've had lectures from Duane Laflin, Jon Allen, Ali Cardarbra and Geoffrey Durham. Some other clubs have a busier schedule, while others are quieter.

Some lectures are worthwhile, some aren't. Depends upon your tastes and the lecturer.

The knowledge given also depends upon the lecturer. Some are part Dealer Dems, while others are more theory based.

You can get news about some lectures on Duncan Trillo's MagicWeek (www.magicweek.co.uk). Some clubs have their own websites, and their lectures might be advertised there.

Hope that helps.

There are several factors.

First, the lecturer. Your not going to go wrong with Chad Long or David Williamson.

Second, the target audiance and your skill. If it is a set of lecture notes designed for beginers, you might not find it usefull (though you very well might!). Most notes tend to be between an easy and medium skill level.

Third, Depends on you! what do you like? A lecture on the sponge rabiits and performing for children might not be so usefull to a someone who focuses on gambeling exposes...
but you never know.

worth noting:
If your a toronto magician you'll know why Im so excited about this lecture. Probably one of the most commercial magicians in canada. Everything hes teaching is from his performing repetiour. Cards, non-card (the best non card Ive seen out there. Including his hot new releases "the thing" and "chico the mind reading monkey"...)

Bill Abbotts lecture!!!! Toronto through Chicago.
If you're reading this you're my favorite magician.

Act 1 is very interesting, but its a book, not a lecture note.

I hear paul cummins notes (fasdiu I think) are great, but ive never read them.
If you're reading this you're my favorite magician.

Ian's reply above says it all really !

The conventions, Blackpool, South Sheils, and the rest, will normally allow anyone to attend. Just buy the ticket.
My club is members only for lectures so check if you are interested.

Lecture notes vary in quality and content, but at best you might get something that has not been generaly published.

BUT -- the last couple of years at Blackpool the lecturers have not had notes.
Just a pile of dvd/cd roms, so I think the days of lecture notes may be over.
