I was going to do a gig at our homecoming football game here at the school where I teach. I had it all set up for a car to drag me off a platform and onto a bed of nails if I failed to make the escape. Basically the same escape that Mr. Murphy posted a short time ago.

The principal and activities director canceled the event at the last minute citing safety reasons.

Obviously I wasn't going to reveal how the effect works, I tired assuring them that I would be safe, I even signed a waiver releaving the school and staff of all responsibility, but alas. My pleas fell on deaf ears.

Anyone have any experience in dealing with this sort of nonsense? I really wanted to do the effect for a number of reasons.

There's ignorance, and intentional ignorance. The first, you can do something about. The latter, you just have to accept that some people are stupid, and that it's not related to how many degrees they have.

And it's not as if the kids would go out and try it. They generally have a better sense of reality testing than adults.

I have found that if a third party (Wife, girl friend,Agent etc)Acts on your behalf, this pushes the possibilities of getting accepted.
I have used this ploy a number of times to satisfaction. Also outline the proposal on official paper (I have used an Equity headed sheet) This lends some importance to the fact that you could be safe and sane!!!
Ken.
BTW UK shows now require Risk Assesment Forms!! (So lie).

In all honestly you haft to see it from their point of view...Imagine the headline that would be in the paper if you did make a mistake. Its not ignorance its a liability and before you think I'm being to reserved I am a sword swallower and general freak and I have learned that you need to respect "YOUR CUSTOMERS" wants....they don't want to end up on some HELP 911 reality show...

A story for you.....

Many years ago I worked for my name-sake. I did his "World of Energy" show in schools across the US.

One of the bits in the show was to put a kids hand on a cookie tray, cover it with vermiclite (sp?), put a quarter on top of that, then heat it with a propane torch until it was red hot, and light a match off of it.

Cool stuff!

One of the lines was "Billy is protected from the heat, the same way your long underwear protects you from the cold, by trapping air."

Kid goes home, puts on his long johns, turns on the stove, and sticks his arm in the fire!!!!!!!

Stupid? Yep! Did the line really confuse him? Of course not, Billy was an idiot.

BUT

Billy's Dad was a lawyer, and he sued EVERYONE. All the insurance companies settled too.....

....so you have to see it from the schools point of view.
