I have a friend early 20's fairly new to magic. Does mostly close up, He has bought many videos and books. He has rings, cards, cups and balls. I am looking for an idea as to what new "prop" that he might not buy for himself, that I might get him for Christmas?

Thank you.

Mr A

P.S. I think this is a you have a nice site here.

That would be a hard call. If I don't know what he already has. Anything that I would suggest would probably what he already has.

For myself, I would like to own:
1. Harry Lorayne's "Personal Collection".
2. David Regal's "Constant Fooling".
3. Leather Himber Wallet.
this list could go on and on.

Or you could just give him cash and let him decide for himself.

If he likes close up, maybe Michael Ammar's book "The Magic Of Michael Ammar" would be a good bet? Does your friend have any videos? Maybe that would work.

If he likes cards: Harry Lorayne's "Close-Up Card Magic".
There are 10 kinds of people: those who understand binary numbers, and those who don't.

Sorry I was not clear.
He already has a ton of books and videos, I am looking more for something extra that he would not spend money on. Maybe something to carry his stuff in or a table to work on or anything else that would help make his "fun" a little more fun.
He has cup and balls and rings.
Thanks for the help.

I would buy him a close up mat. That may be something he doesn't have, might not buy for himself, but could use.

Sheesh! I'm just not fast enough!
I was going to suggest, as ZeroG already has, a close-up mat or even more than one, in several colors.
It's the sort of thing that you can't have too many of, if you use them, and they DO wear out.
Same with cards.
Why not several decks of cards?
He will eventually need -- and appreciate -- them.

I would consider a gift certificate. I've never tried to buy one at a magic shop or online magic store so I don't even know if most carry them (maybe someone else has a suggestion in this area), but I don't think you can make a safer choice than that.

...think not that all wisdom is in your school. You may have studied other paths, but, it is important to remember that no matter who you are or where you come from, there is always more to learn.

I would probably buy him a GOOD "think" magic book! By this I mean a book that is NOT about tricks but about magic philosophy in itself. I think that as magicians we have a tendency to always be wanting to buy "just another trick" or book/video with tricks but few of us now a days spend the time to read magic books about magic itself rather than just tricks.

Books that I read in the past that I can recommend are:

Neo-Magic Artistry by S. H. Sharpe
Strong Magic by Darwin Ortiz
The Trilogy by Dariel Fitzkee (these are 3 seperate books)
Shattering Illusions by Jamy Ian Swiss

Hope it helps!

Perhaps you could consider giving him a close-up mirror. This is a set of three mirrors connected together that the magician sets up around his/her close-up pad. With these mirrors, your friend would be able to check all his angles when doing an effect.

This was a good suggestion, the kind of books most magicians don't buy, buy should buy. Strong Magic is one I'll second from this list.

I can also think of a good book all about packet tricks he might find to be a great reference work, that not many have in the USA.
