I must say, I have gone back and read some of the advice from the first page and earlier posts in this thread and I must say OMG! there was some terrible and wonky advice offered here. Also, you can see how times have changed in 17 years.

I can definitely see how they needed some experienced entertainment business specialists here.

If you are going to work for corperations that is a totally different story, as they all have their own process, and you should ask what it is.

As for prsonal checks bouncing, it is a simple matter to go to your baak, and ask them to send the check "For Collection", that means when the account has enough money, they will deduct the amount of your check. Now, this may cause the person to bounce other checks, because of insuffencent funds, but your check is paid. If memory serves me correctly, they generally attempt to watch the account for 3 weeks.

Decomposed, for what it's worth the way that I solved this problem about 4 years ago was to start demanding full payment up front and in advance. No more deposits and later payments. That's what books the gig. A lot of my business (new business especially) is directed through my website, and like everything else ordered online, it is paid for and then delivered. Some people don't like the feeling of not collecting some money the day of the show, but as long as I am selling gigs and filling up the calendar I'm cash-flowing my business and I've not regretted doing this for one minute. I have yet to have a corporate client that balks at doing this either. Funny enough, the ONE time a couple of years ago that I bent this rule for a client guess what? Their CHECK BOUNCED! They burned not only me but several other friends who worked this three day convention. This lady skipped town and none of us were ever paid. This has been my business model ever since and I don't see ever changing it.

Thanks Curt. Since then, I have been receiving cash payments.

Neither can I. The only advice that works is to get paid in advance and in cash. You control the who, what, where, why and how you will work. Everything else, is just someones opinion.

I don't get paid in advance or in cash. It generally is electronic.

I can't remember the last cash payment I took either.

I assume you mean things like paypal and credit cards, as bank transfers wouldn't be something most people would do? The problem with those forms of payment is that the charges can and often are reversed. Cash is king.

Cash is dead in business. An ACH transfer costs literally 35 cents. All businesses can do them. Cash is not king in business. It makes tax time so much more difficult.

The OP was in 2002. If as a business you do not want to absorb the fees involved with being a business in 2019 then don't be in business.

Cash and checks are time consuming and very out dated.

Very few professional market clients (if any) would ever consider paying you in cash. The only person I ever saw paid in cash was when I booked Chuck Berry. He would pull up to the gig in his Caddy, go right to my production trailer and want to be paid in cash. He put the cash in his guitar case which he kept close by on stage. The amount you paid him was his price plus $3000 additional cash. We had to provide backline and the backing band. If the band was good and what he believed to be to his "professional" standard, at the end of the gig he would give back/refund the additional $3,000, if not he'd keep it. Of course, he was Chuck Berry, very few others would pull this off.

Also, just as a footnote to the story he did get severely punished and penalized for tax evasion, and for the rest of his life endured continuous audits from the IRS as a marked (and very vocal) man.

Cash in not king. This is more personal opinion being passed off as business advice. Few businesses would ever even consider operating this way or working with an entertainer demanding this.

Perhaps if you were working kids parties in the consumer market but even then I wouldn't suggest this.

Most business that I have dealt with still have a petty cash drawer for those wanting cash about $2000 or the Euro equivelent. Cash is still king and always will be.

The 21st century is a wonderful place to live. Making a client show up with cash is just not the way it is done. Now I'm not talking about birthday parties. That may still be ruled by cash.

I have seen street performers wgo can accept electronic payment!

The only thing I want to be taken seriously about in my business is getting paid. Cash is king. Any other form of payment has it's problems. Not the least of which are the security concerns associated with digital payments. Not something I want or need in my life.

All these things aside think of how the perception comes across to the client. None of them are good.

Pay me up front and in cash. Either you are doing something shady with the taxes or you want me to. Then being paid up front in cash means you don't trust the client. Either perception is just not what I'd want to leave the client with.

Thereis a definite very low glass ceiling that one reaches taking only cash in advance.

You can not run a business on only cash it is that simple.

Going through life paranoid is a choice and is yours to make. But just remember people counterfeit cash all the time. Just sayin.

Paranoia is a bad way to run a business.

Just cause I'm paranoid DOESN'T mean their not out to get me. LOL Honestly, my whole life revolves around security. It's the nature of my most important business, life and liberty.

That is a choice and I respect it. That choice comes with very serious limitations.
