It really depends on who you are showing it to and in what situation. If it is being presented to friends you know well in a casual setting they may very well ask "Could I have opened the can?" in which case you certainly could say "of course" and quickly move on. I just try and make the opening of the can to be an absolute non event, it is simply opening a can od soda, nothing more. I think the worst thing anyone could possibly do (not that anyone WOULD do this) would be to somehow make a production about opening the can. Just show the coin is gone, open the can and quickly proceed to prove the coin is in fact inside.

Hi everyone. Sorry to have to bring this thread back up but I have recently purchased "coin through soda can" and felt I had to add something to the discussion regarding what would leave a more memorable impression to the effect. Personally I believe destroying the can in any way "COULD" ruin this effect. My reasons for this is that, we as magicians are not aware of whether the coin can exit the opening or not. Remember, we borrow the objects, we have no foreknowledge as to whether the coin can exit the can or not. So by emptying the contents of the can "COULD" imply we knew that it could be emptied and also destroying the opening "COULD" imply foreknowledge of its failure to exit the opening. (a little bit presumptuous, no!)So on that note I would let the spectator empty the contents and if it falls out, it falls out. If it appears to be difficult coming out "THEN" suggest to the spectator cutting it out with a knife or something. This could only highten the performance. What do you guys think?
thanks, Glen.

Too much thinking and/or analyzing of an effect that has "no bad points to it" This is IMHO the best impromptu effect to hit us in many many years. It is human nature for one to rewind the tapes and guess when stumped.
I have performed this many times now however I practiced this for many weeks before showing anyone. I wanted this to be smooth as silk just as Mr. Houchin demo's it. When I perform this wonderful effect , after the vanish, and onto the shaking and asking if they hear that, (rattling) I notice thier eyes widen (I know they are saying to themselves inside , Sometimes out loud, NO WAY) at this point I begin to mirror them with the same excitement. I then say " Hear that, Hear that?" " Here look, I then pop the top and immediately begin pouring it out, when the last drop hits and upon given a little shake I immediately hand them the can. I have yet to hear one person begin guessing immediately, They are still excited at what just happened and amazed. Later amonst friends I have heard them talking and guessing but the end of these conversations I hear " He smacked the coin in the "***" can , spun the whole can using only 2 fingers and the quarter was inside" If performed effortlessly and flawlessly this effect kills and there is no need to change a thing. Almost every magic dealer online has this. Magic Depot ships in blazing speed as does hank lee, denny and lee, hocus pocus, etc

This effect really floors em, like everyone says. I see no improvement by destroying the can, but as someone mentioned, how about following it up with healed and sealed? This means it's not impromptu, but I use the effect in my kids' shows. After the coin is extracted from the can by the assistant (usually Dad), and it's been examined, I take the can back, crush it a little, and then reach for my next prop with the other hand. At that point, the hand holding the can goes out of sight momentarily behind my table, where I switch it for a prepared can (healed and sealed). The new can is then placed in full view of the audience while I perform another short and unrelated effect. Then, I pick up the H&S can, and perform that effect. This works, because after the coin in soda effect, the audience believe the can is finished with, so they aren't looking for a switch at this stage. This obviously only works in a show setting, but believe me it leaves a lasting impression - not only did the guy get a coin into a sealed can, he also RESEALED and REFILLED the can!

I enjoy destroying the can, bend it back and forth, ripping it apart then pouring the coin out. leaving the can in that condition really hits home

I usually just leave the coin in the can, and hand it out to the spectator (good for walkaround!)
