OK... even though I'm not completely new to magic, I've never really gotten into, nor do I fully understand MENTALISM.

Can anyone tell me what it is?

Mentalism, in general, is a branch of magic that by simply using the power of the mind seems to defy the laws of physics, such as spoon bending, mentally moving an object, and mind reading. You can read a little more about this topic on wikipedia.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mentalism/ I have to credit Jay Sankey's 22 Blow To The Head when I first attempted to learn mentalism. It's a great dvd that teaches some seemingly impossible effects that a newbie like me back then can learn and perform mentalism.

13 steps is good. However if your just getting into mentalism- probably want to wait a while. Karl Fulves has some beginner mentalism books. Check those out first. But granted- 13 steps is the ideal book to work up to.

Best always,

Matt,
I am in complete agreement that the Fulves books could be an intro to anyone who is curious.
These books can be found at most major bookstores.
Peace,
Parson

I'm spending some time reviewing Karl Fulves' "Self-Working Mental Magic" right now. There's some great stuff in there, and it's a really good "toe-in-the-water" for those wanting to get into mentalism/mental magic.

After that, Annemann's "Practical Mental Magic" and Corinda's "13 Steps to Mentalism" are required reading.

John,
There is an essay in my book "Can you keep a secret?" that is titled Mentalism 101, if you send me a note to paul@mindguy.com I will send you the essay which should help explain to you this genre as well as where to start studying it.

Study Joseph Dunninger. He was great, it is reported that it says on his tombstone:
