Slates seem a bit outdated in this day, but their use can be justified in several ways. Probably the easiest way is simply to mention their use during the heyday of spiritism. Spellbinder may have a point about them being humorous, but relating them to their historical use would seem largely to overcome this.

I thought contacting Marjory - houndini nemesis would be a nice way of tying it to a chalk board friendly time period.

I think the spam or hold message could be funny without killing th concept if the spirit you are trying to manifest used to be an IT guy or SBC operator. Then, you would have proof positive it is really them! Go ahead, ask them something only they could know.....(then the spam or hold message...yep, its them.)
Another unique idea was put forth by Tim Ellis on Ellis in Wonderland with "death slates". Its not too weird but it does linger in the air after the reveal. Nice.
"What's your drug?" she asked. "Hope" he said, "The most addicting one of all."

I did Tim's Death Slates for about two years in my previous show...it is a killer routine. The whole issue with using slates or any "out of date" prop is going to be the framework that you put around the routine.
Eugene Burger has a wonderful routine in his book, Spirit Theater, in which the use of the slates makes perfect sense.. Rick

NJJ,
Funny routine. Love the spam part. Questions and answers, very clever idea. Good work and good luck with it. |

I got some framed slates back when they were still available in toy stores (not so far back as when they were used in schools, thank you! I'm not THAT old!). I made a f*** gimmick from a sheet of black construction paper. I imagine that's still available -- a sort of rough paper that comes in various colors for making little craft things and such. A little chalk dust on the gimmick and on the slate, and they look exactly the same.

I own a set of Bazar de magia's slates. I usually like their stuff a lot but these are absolute crap. The frames fell apart within a week and the "locking" piece didn't lock at all. Not necessarily a problem, but if you're paying for locking slates you want locking slates. Better to spend the money on Dave Powell slates like these: http://www.dennymagic.com/cgi-bin/hazel.......m=005911

I have used the Bazar slates for 4 years now, and I have to say that they are excellent. I will also say, however, that I needed a smaller set for another routine that I do and bought a couple of slates from Michael's Crafts for less than $5.00. I use the handling that I learned in "Seance" that allows all 4 sides to be shown while the performer is numbering the slates, then allows the writing to still appear: no gimmicks, just handling...beautiful stuff!

I forced a card on the bottom from cutting it,then I used 5 cards from a seperate deck and marked one, that card was written on the board before hand, then I force the same card in the seprate deck, after that I wave chalk over my board and the predicted card will appear written now that's a lot of work but it's easy to preform

I sent numerous emails over this summer in regard to my slates and never received a reply - this is in reference to the slates I've been waiting for now, for nearly a year. The last time I spoke with anyone, it was April 21st, and I spoke to Martin. His email stated the replacements were sent, and asked for feedback. None of my emails have been answered since. The replacements addressed the flap size sufficiently, but the m----t was plainly visible as a bulging disc right in the center of the slate ! Word was your longterm carpenter had died, and Bazar de Magia was looking to find a suitable replacement, and that Bazar was also not satisfied with the replacements. I agree with the above sentiment that usually, Bazar's items are high quality, but these slates were terrible. The irony is, it should be such a simple thing to adjust, but apparently it's difficult to get sheet steel in a thin enough gauge cut to the proper size. Most industrial sheers seemed "geared" for heavier gauges. I hope that I am still in the queue, so to speak, for a replacement ?

I guess the question is which ones are truly THE BEST spirit slates out there new or old?

My guess is that it's down to the Dave Powell Slates or the Thayer/Owen Dr. Q Slates, but I don't know which, of the two of them, would be considered "better".
I'm guessing the Dr. Q's, but I really don't know. The Dr. Qs claim that they can be handled by the spectator without no fear of them detecting the gimmick whatsoever.

My arrived last week, thought they were from Bazar de Magia but in fact they are from Spain, from "El Rey de la Magia", they are quite old (dated 1960 in the instructions), they were from a famous uruguayan magician called Victor Canteiro that passed away in 2004.
Non magnetic, very strong and look relyable. |
