Hi All--
I am seeking anyone who might be able to lead me to a book, magazine article, pdf file, etc. that might talk about constucting a chop cup. Reason being-- I wish to make one that represents a "golf cup" Will probably construct the chop cup out of a black plastic cup that would be similar in shape and size to an actual "golf cup". So, I am sure the construction will require the the cup, the usual m***** and probably some form of resin. But then again, I'm not totally sure. If I was, I wouldn't be posting here, now would I. Ha! My favorite chop cup is the Rings-N-Things Don Alan (mine - circa 1975) So I will probably try and copy size, though not actual shape. However I would like to allow room for a fairly large final load, like the one(s) I use with the Don Alan cup. Hoping to hear back from the talented minds of The Magic Café. Thanks, Michael P.S. Also looking for small "gimmicked" golf balls. Thanks again. |

Michael,
I'm not sure on the cup its self, but as for the golf balls, I'd use the foams golf balls found at stores like Big 5 Sporting Goods. They're higher density foam, you can insert a gimmick and the hole will "heal" its self back up, and they're softer so they won't talk when inside the cup. Also, they look identical to a real golfball, just not quite as shiny. Hope this help! |

DearWiseOne--
Thanks for the advise. I am in Scotland now, but am returning to the US next week. While there, I will check out my favorite Big 5. Appreciate the suggestion. Thanks alot! Michael |

You could just put the gimmick on the bottom, mix some epoxy glue, pour it in and let it dry, the just spary the whole thing black.
Or get a ring which has the neccessary gimmick built in and use an ungimmicked cup. I have used a small gimmick glued (with spirit gum) to my middle finger's middje joint and covered with a bit of band-aid (if there's enough spirit gum it sticks really well). Very impromptu feeling with this set-up. Pretty imvisible as well.

The cheapest chop cup I have seen is made of black plastic, already made; but it might be too small. maybe royal magic

There is RTV sealant available in Black, and I think I have even seen colored epoxy in black. Home Depot.

Some Epoxy and RTV compounds cure with an exothermic reaction. Read that they can get warm or hot. Elevated temperatures can adversly affect magnets, I would test the process prior to creating a final product.

Golf cups are white, not black. Check with you local golf course and see if they have one you can buy from them. If you aren't worried about filling in the hole for the pin then you can use that space to gimmick the cup. Fill it in insert the Mxxxxx and then cover it with a very thin layer of epoxy. Sand to finish. Repaint with white paint. Make a ball with appropriate strength gimmick and you are done. It may be very frustrating work to achieve the proper attraction but it is simple trial and error.

Oddly enough.. epoxy is water soluable when wet.. which means it can be mixed with black latex paint (or even better Universal Black Tint) before it's poured.
It will still set.. and you'll have black through and through.. this will also work with white.. or any other paint color... Remember though, that fast seting epoxy yellows in a short time.. but the pigment in the paint my keep this from being obvious. I do the same thing with two part urehtane all the time.. |
