There is a current discussion on the "penny for your thoughts" forum about the need for a bit more "security" on The Magic Café -- in order to prevent disclosure of mentalist secrets to the general public and also to entice more knowledgable and professional folks to remain in the forum by reducing the number of novice questions.

I believe that registration and a password should be required to access not only for
the mentalists forums, but also ANY of the Magic Café forums, with the sole exception of a
limited number of forums that could be geared to the general public or the total novice.

Having recently joined Magic Café, I was surprised that I don't even have to enter my password
in order to read all the messages (excluding the Secret Sessions, I guess).

At the very least, why not require people to register and answer a few simple questions
indicating their bona fide interest in and involvement in magic. These questions could include:

-- name the magic society (such as IBM) that you are currently a member of, including local
"ring" or "assembly" number

-- answer a couple of very simple magic trivia or history questions to see if you know the name
of any magicians other than the handful that the general public know Blaine, Houdini,
Copperfield, etc.

-- list at least three effects that you currently can or do perform (whether professionally or even
as a serious amateur)

-- give the name of one of their favorite books on magic

-- give the name of their favorite magic shop

Etc. Etc. Perhaps the registrant wouldn't have to answer ALL the question but would have to
answer at least 3 out of 5, or something like that.

And then, you'd have to log in with your user name and password even to read the forums, not
only to post messages. (Again, there could be a few forums open to the general public).

I'm posting this here in the hopes that the management of the Café will take this suggestion under consideration.

This has been suggested before. And I think you'll find that, at this point, you will not be able to get into secret sessions. Not for a while yet, anyway--read the rules to find out why.

Since you aren't allowed to reveal secrets, methods, construction details, etc, the disclosure of secrets to the public isn't an issue. Further, we have Larry Becker, Banacheck, Ford Kross, Ian Rowland, Ted Lesley, Bob Cassidy, Max Maven and many other "names" as members--doesn't get more professional and knowledgable than that!

The Café's slogan is "Magicians Helping Magicians," and we encourage ALL members--even novices--to participate fully within the scope of the rules. There are already "protected" sites out there for the discussion of secrets in detail. The Café was specifically designed so that "no-names" could talk with "names."

Well I certainly appreciate the "no-names" being able to talk to "names" since I am a "no-name" myself!

However, I am seriously into the study of magic and mentalism, so although I may be a "no-name" I'm not a "no-brain" . . . and hope to be able to dialogue with others who have substantial interest in and some background in the crafts of magic and mentalism . ... . .

Anyway, MagicCafe is a great find for me, and I look forward to reading and posting . ..
