At most of my shows depending on how many kids .. I usually blow up the balloons by mouth but if there are more then 15 ppl then I don't use my mouth as it is WAY FASTER to use a pump

I was at a party last night, where I did balloons for three hours straight. I noticed today that the area under my ears (where the jaw hinges open) is swollen and is tender. Does anybody know that this is?
I don't do a line like this very often, but this was for my neighbor hood school carnival - maybe my technique was bad. I was getting very tired the last hour. I don't think I want to do that again - too grueling. Ron |

You know you are a magician when you have boxes full of lecture notes you have never read, but still are excited about going out and buying more.

This happens to me if I blow up the balloons by mouth for over an hour and thirty minutes.

I'm getting lightheaded just thinking about doing this.
I don't make balloons but I do plan on using one or two for a magic effect. Guess I'll practice.

I started orally inflating 260's in 1969. I now have an umbilical hernia, which is a weakened area of muscle at my belly button that is allowing my intestine to try to push through. It looks like a severe version of an "Outy". I have a friend who had one the size of a tennis ball because of blowing up balloons by mouth. He had it surgically repaired and is back in business. I'll be getting mine done as well. I don't want to suggest that no one should blow 'em up by mouth. Just be aware that there are some side effects.

I have been a mouth blower for over 20 years. I recently went to an ear, nose and throat doctor just to make sure everything was alright. Actually my regular doctor sent me for an large uvula, I thought it was a compliment till I found out where it was!! My doctor told me I had no concerns for what I do for a living. He said my facial muscle structure was what keeps me in business. I do not puff out my cheeks when I blow.
On a side note I had a Spirometer test done and It confused my doctor. My results was a 65 year old smoker. I am a 44 year old non smoker. The doctor explained to me the test only measure the air you don't use in your lungs, since I meter my air regularly it show I am short of breath, when I am not. He said he has seen similiar results in runner. Okay, I know that I repeatedly post that I blow by mouth, which I have for almost 14 years now. ONE DAY A YEAR, I don't recommend it. Today's the day. I just finished an outdoor festival event where I set up a booth and sell the balloons. I doubled my prices (thinking that would decrease my workload)...did not change a thing. Weather was great (last year, WIND..RAIN cut things back by about 2 hours), and breeze was nice, temperature was wonderful (little too sunny at times), so I ended up doing over 600 balloons BY MOUTH from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m., with an hour and a half lunch break. I AM ONE TIRED MONKEY TONIGHT! Buy a pump. I have one, it just gets in my way while using it. Do as I say, and not as I do!

Well, let me start out by saying that I have been mouth-inflating 260's since my 8th birthday in 1976. I "went pro" 2 years ago and I won't carry anything I can't inflate by mouth. I carry 160, 260, 350, 646, 6" hearts, Bee Bodies, geos, and various rounds. Having said all that, I will tell you that I have different aproaches for different gigs. For restaurants and "shorter" gigs lasting less than 3 hours I don't bring any pump except for a tiny pencil-pump for 160's, which I prefer to pump instead of blow. For longer gigs I have a battery powered pump for when I expect to use more than 300 balloons or so.
As far as "how" to mouth-inflate, The others have really given all the advice necessary. The only thing I have to add is that I stretch the balloon completely (I also make a show out of this for added entertainment) and then I stretch as I inflate. It's almost like playing an instrument to find the "right" tension to facillitate inflation. I do not use the "starter bubble" method. I do use my cheeks a little bit to help get that first puff into the balloon, but I don't let them "pooch" out too much, and I don't stop once the first puff is in the balloon. I just continue until I have the length I need. Also, I mouth-inflate much faster than a pump, which is one of the reasons I only use it for longer gigs because it slows me down. Air pressure is much more important than volume. If you can develop the diaphram muscles to give the required pressure repeatedly on a continuous basis, you can count on it for increasing numbers of balloons as you develop your muscles. One note about pressure vs. volume: It takes the same amount of pressure to inflate 2, 3, 4 or more balloons as it takes to inflate one balloon. You just need more volume and the ability to get a good enough seal with your lips so that you don't blow "around" the balloons. |
