For those of you who have bought my book, take a careful look at the dust jacket. For those who don't have the book, you're out of luck....just kidding.
...You can go to my website to see the dust jacket: http://www.geocities.com/larrybarnowsky/ Now either at the bottom of page one on the left, or the top of page 2 click "see dust jacket or bookcover". A PDF will load provided you have Adobe Acrobat on your computer. ...Examine the dust jacket carefully and write down every number you read including duplicates. You may have to scroll or use the magnifier. To win you need to answer these 3 questions correctly: ..... 1. How many numbers did you see? ..... 2. Perform a basic mathematical operstion on two of the numbers and arrive at a magically significant number. What is that number and why is it significant? ..... 3. Add a small prime number to one of the 4 digit numbers and get a date significant in magic history. What is that date and why is it significant? ..... Rules: One answer to each question per post. Maximum of 5 posts allowed. The winner will receive an assortment of 5 large Chinese coins, including silver dollar size ones and larger ones. The prize will be awarded to the person that comes closest to the correct answers. ..... Best of Luck, Larry |

I'll give it a try:
1: 13 numbers, 15 counting those in letters 2: 21-twelve=9, the number 9 is used in many forces. For exemple name a number between 10 and 20. 15? Well 15-(1+5)=9. Let's count to card number 9! 3: 1950+1=1951 Al Baker is dead in 1951 Richard |

1. 14 separate numbers, including duplicates. Listed numerically: 0, 1, 11, 12, 21, 300, 1950, 9764790.
2. 12 + 1 : Not only has 13 been linked to superstition and luck for ages, but there are Corinda's 13 steps to mentalism. 3. 1957 (1950 + 7) : The first printing of Dai Vernon's Book of Magic by Lewis Ganson. Only because I am a math teacher, I must mention one is neither prime nor composite. |

These are excellent answers from Aaron and Richard. Aaron you are of course correct that 1 is not a prime number. The prime you choose does not have to be one of the numbers on the dust jacket- just a small prime. The Al Baker and Vernon answers are similar to what I am looking for and they show you guys are really thinking. However, no prize yet.

The math skills you need for this (other than knowing prime numbers such as 2,3,5,7 etc.) you learned in elementary school.
The last hint was too good. I wish I could take it back. I'll PM people who have first answered one of the questions corrrectly. Posted: Nov 17, 2005 8:05pm ------------------------------------------------------------- Well this thread was moved here by mysterious forces. Hint to question #3: Think Coin Magic |

Ok here is my first try:
1: 15 total including the ones I can read. 2: 9- any two digit number between 10 and 20 when the separate digits are added to each other then subtracted from the original number gives you 9. 3: 1950 + 2= 1952 David Roth was born. |

1. I see 37 individual numbers including the two spelled out or 12 sets of numbers - 21, 1899, 21, 0-9764790-0-1, 21, 21, 12, 11, 300, 21, 1950, and 11.
2. 1899 - 21 yields 1874 the year of Houdini's birth 3. Adding 2 to 1950 gives 1952 the date Bobo's Modern Coin Magic was first published. God knows I tried... |

In addition to my above answer, JB Bobo printed his Modern Coin Magic first in 1952 (which is 1950 + 2, the smallest and only even prime). This a little closer?

1. 15 numbers 21-21-21-0-9764790-0-1-21-12-11-300-21-1950-11-1899
2. 1899-21 = 1878 - The year Houdini's family arrived in America 3. 1950 + 2 - 1952 the year Bobo's Modern Coin Magic first printed or 1899 + 11 - 1910 - year J.B. Bobo was born |

I suppose one could say their were 15 "sets" of numbers if the ISBN number is broken up in 4 different numbers because of the hypens. Therefore I will throw that in as a second try on question one.
Posted: Nov 17, 2005 8:51pm ------------------------------------------------------------- Gad ... I can't substract... 1899 minus 21 yields 1878 not 1874 so if it's Houdini, it must be when he came to America. |

We have a winner. Magicmanr has the correct answers.
1. 15 numbers 2. Houdini's family emigrated to America in 1878= 1899-21 3. Bobo's book was published in 1952= 1950+2 You all did very well. I am impressed. Some of the answers were very creative. They weren't wrong; just not the one I thought up. Larry |

Wow! Excellent! Thanks Larry! I never would've guessed I'd get them that quickly! (the great hint for the Houdini & Bobo question is the only thing that saved me! LOL)
