Just a question... do you really must have a comical style of show or its just you need to be yourself if you are a comedian? thanks!

You really have to just go with your style. If you would rather be very dramatic and you have a way of capturing the audience with your choreographing and strong emotional connections, go with it. The comedy side of magic and for theater in general is the most challenging style. You have to have the right personality and vibe. The biggest challenge in doing comedy, is the ability to step outside of your comfort zone. In the end we are all partially play a character up there in the lights and the other half is who were are everyday when we are at home or with our friends. Which way you take it is up to you, and what you feel like your stronger at.
It deffinantly has to be a part of your personality though, because if you are completely faking a persona or character it will be very evident to the audience and will make for a corny show in my oppinion. Just skipping a Rock out There, -Jared |

Seriously without the ability to be funny ANY attempt at comedy magic falls flat and really is painfull to watch.
So don't do it!

I agree comedy can be scripted, but only to an extent. However you may have the ability to be very funny. We are not going to be the judge of that, only the audience can. On that note, the better time an audience is having the more they are going to likely to warm up and laugh. They came to be entertained, and will typically be in the mood to laugh. If youve never opened up that side of your personality to an audience, you'll never know how it will turn out. Could be a home run!

Jared your right and your wrong. Yes comedy MUST be scripted, but the place to try out if your funny is NOT in front of an audience my friend.
The place is in learning, and rehersing so there is NO question you are funny. THen when the client pays for a comedy magician that is what they get. I get hired because people see me headlining comedy clubs so therefore they expect it and that may be an advantage certianly. Comedy is tough. True comedy does NOT come from the props and tricks used, it comes from the performer. Why force an audience to watch it if it will go bad>? it is not fair to the people who have paid to see you. Now if your just starting out that may be different. I am talking about people paying premium prices for high priced shows.

Well of course, which is why I said to an extent. In the end going back to the post by CARDCAPTOR. I agree, I must have come across wrong. Presenting a show to a full house full of corny one liners and poor humor is a sudiences worst nightmare. However if you can find the right comfortable approach with the right material and THE RIGHT VENUE take the opportunity. Everyone has to start somewhere.

I would think, to be a top notch magic-comedian, 3 things must be present:
1)the situations you present, the way you present them, and thy way you deal with them must all be AT LEAST very funny. 2) The way you deal with intangables, such as situations you havent scripted and audiances remarks, must be humurous as well. 3) You must do GREAT magic. cha-ching! Im out.
If you're reading this you're my favourite magician.

If you are not funny naturally, it will not work.
I have played Comedy Clubs and my magic is very serious. But the patter is funny. Watch Hary Andersen, John Farrentino, Carl Balantine, Mac King, Bill Malone, Whit Haydin. Also watch your favorite comedians. When you discuss comedy, it is not funny. Watch and learn. If you are funny it will work.

Being a comedy magician is easy. Just mess up enough of the magic so people laugh at you (not with you).

Who is your audience? Kids? There are lots of funny props that are just funny without being scripted, and a line or two and your on your way to being funny.
Comedy is a skill and it requires study, practice, timing, and a big outgoing personality.

Like any true art, comedy is not easy...nor is it s simple matter of screwing up enough to "make people laugh at you." Carl Ballantine is one of the funniest Magicians-in-trouble ever. His act consisted primarily of magic-gone-wrong...and yet, he was a gifted and very talented magician in every respect first and foremost. The true comedy greats...Tim Conway, Red Skelton, Richard Pryor and countless others...carried their audiences with them on journeys through shared views of the world so that the audiences laughed WITH them...not at them. Screwing up a magic effect to gain a few laughs is not comedy...it's a pathetic attempt to gain a few cheap laughs. Comedy is a journey that requires a plan, practice and confidence. Skip

Are you smoking your sox? In order to mess up and be funny you need years of preperation, perfect timing, repeatability, and it helps to be born funny. Everything that look spontaneous on stage is the result of being a total perfectionist. Comedy magic is an extremely serious business, and if you try to do it without first doing your homework you will look like a fool on stage. NO JOKE Al PS The audience does not have to be in the mood to laugh. This is the sole responsibility of the comedian to put the smile on their faces. A giddy audience is the result of a professional comedian. If any thing they fold their arms and say, OK I paid to get in here so make me laugh funny boy.

"Dying is easy, Comedy is hard" Sir Donald Wolfit
I have seen many a magician die in performance, but is it so much worse when a "comedically challenged" performer attempts humor. How many time have you witnessed a performer tell a joke and he is the only one laughing? And worse, he never seems to realize it, and continues doing this over and over again. Some of our best magic "technicians" suffer this disability. Some advice I have tried to follow regarding performing magic, comedy or for that matter anything in front of an audience...."If you can't, don't!" |

This is how I am a comedy magician. I am a magician, and I am funny. I am not a comedian doing magic, I am a magician doing comedy. All I do is do a magic show, and be funny. Use funny patter, be quick on your feet to answer people in a funny way. Its pretty easy!
