I ordered "Jeff McBride's Art of Card Manipulation". Is there a certain type of card that I should get or can any card be used?

Buy Bees or Bicyles. And if you ordered the 2nd volume, he will talk about which cards to use. Good luck!

For first timers, I'd say buy a red Bee deck. If you start to like it then I'd say, go buy a real deck. But the first volume doesn't really have any manipulation in it

Bee is the best for this kind of manipuation.

Any card with a red back design and NO borders. That's why steamboats and bee's work well.

Yea but steamboats are more manipulative than bees.
Bees are slightly too rigid. Roman |

Steamboats are from US Playing card co, they are thinner stock than the air-cushion finished Bees or Bicycles, but have good longetivity (unlike the similar finish Aviators), and the red/white pattern on the back is a very good blend, which will make a backpalmed card very unnoticeable between your fingers, even if you hold a stack of 25 or more, which is about how many I begin my manipulation routine with.
However, Jeff's new card of choice has a regular air-cushion finish, I think, which he manufactures. At $10 a pack, though, I'm sticking to my $2.99 steamboats. Bees are fine too, once you subject them to the 'treatment' recommended by Jeff on his dvd's. I used a deck of bee-type casino cards for a long while before I bought the steamboats. Though they're thicker, you can still backpalm 15~20 with some practice (it's more about learning to deal with weird muscle positions and endurance against muscle fatigue), and it falls in line with my "practice with more obtuse/difficult/challenging props, then when you use nicer props it will pay off even more" philosophy. The dvd's are great, I'm sure you must be enjoying them. |
