I was at an antique show yesterday and this guy had some old tricks and I found some cufflinks that had a miniture picture of a Thurston poster, which bought.
BUT, here is the kicker, at a different booth a lady had metal TT. I asked her how much. She says she does not what it is, I said I did not ask that, I just asked how much, I know what it is. The price tag was missing, so she said $2. She wanted to know what it was, she thought it was used in factory or office work. I said if tell you I have to kill you (with a smile). My wife backed me up, she also said I can't tell her.

Metal TT are simply the coolest. I began using one and still do to this day. They are great when you run into a smoker...which is pretty hard these days!

I didn't realize metal TTs were so rare. I have two but always favored my Vernet's. What am I missing? Are the metal TTs no longer available?

If you want to do the putting out a lit cig trick without a metal TT, just put a little foil in the end.

I found the metal TT"s were always too small, I also am able to extinguish cigarettes in the Vernet style without foil. However the foil is a great idea..
I was also under the impression that the metal ones were not considered collectible, any info on this? Rennie
The effect is the important thing, how you achieve it is not.......

I just had to have it and at $2, it was a no brainer. She kept asking me what it was. She did not have a clue. The story alone was worth the $2.

I have very old copper TT from Davenports. I've always kept it becouse its from someone who got me into magic (long time ago)
Anybody knows how to produce a huge puff of smoke from the hankey when you push the lit cigarette in. ?? I've seen a magician do it and it looked fantastic. :kewl: |

One advantage of the metal TT is that with a wick and a little cotton soaked with a very small amount of lighter fluid, you can lift and move a flame from one candle to another.
You will need to drill a small hole. It does get hot. Hold it flame up always. Bob Magic By Sander |

Question? was the tt you bought the same size as Vernet or short maybe 1 inch ?

The extruded aluminum thumb tips were the rule when I started in magic in 19XX.
I understand that in the Middle East there are still some real silver ones covered over with glass for color. If you see one, I'm good for the $2.00! Bob Sanders Magic By Sander |

I had a metal one as a kid (in the 70s or very early 80s I guess). Since I had kid thumbs it didn't fit too well, I tried to bend it in some to make it fit better, and screwed it all up. I haven't found one in years. Somewhere in my parents' house my first vinyl thumbtip is still hidden inside a wall, where I had been playing with a hole where a bannister had been attached and it fell in. I couldn't understand why my dad didn't cut another hole in the wall to get it out for me...

After I found the one I bought, a lady came into my local Magic Shop showing off some old tricks she had. And she had a metal TT as well. She was looking to trade, but the manager was not there and she did not want come back. So she left, no deals transpired.

The ones I still have around came from Adams magic sets/effects. I distinctly remember one with the magic set that looked like a wooden suitcase (cardboard) with a handle on the side from Adams. Still have all the stuff, and wish I had the case.

Hm. I started with metal ones. Just checked out my sock drawer (where I keep thumb tips ) and found a short one and a long one that is probably a metal finger, rather than a thumb. Got some more around here somewhere.
I never liked 'em as well because I always carry a thumb tip in my pocket, and the paint wore off the metal ones pretty quickly (change and keys helping it along) |

I'll have to admit that the plastic models were great improvements in many ways. However, they are a trade off and there are tricks where the old metal ones worked better.
Plastic is definitely a better keeper in the pocket. Bob Sanders Magic By Sander |

Bob, Will you share which tricks those are? I have a metal tip I bought for cig vanishes but would like to get more out of it. Maybe cig in coat?

Manal,
I'm not trying to avoid your good question but I can't answer without exposure. For one thing, Bottle from Napkin (now Bottle or Champaign from Silk) when performed in the 1400s worked much better than most "work-arounds" marketed today. Remember that the TT is not American. Even Marco Polo was late! More advanced cultures made them of brass and cloisonne'. Others tricks use a broken guitar string. Does that start you scheming? Bob Sanders Magic By Sander |

Bob,
Thank you for the reply. You have started the gears turning although I certainly do not have the knowledge you posses. |
