I generally avoid single "tricks" for bizarre material and prefer to perform extended, cohesive routines. That is, the bizarre show has a single theme or task to be accomplished. Then all effects relate to the task at hand.
For example, "The Finger of Azathoth" is a 25-minute routine whose task is to verify that a severed finger is that of a swamp creature and then destroy the finger. All magical effects are integrated into that single theme. (I have not published this routine.) The Hand of Glory (La Main de Gloire) was inspired by a Pascal de Clermont routine. It also has a single theme. Both of these are directed toward "real" magic using the "real" props. That is, I have the actual finger of Azathoth and a "real" Hand of Glory (made by an artist friend). You might begin with a task or goal and then start working magical effects around and toward that goal. This can be challenging because you will have to develop the methods for many of the magical effects.
