I do free shows!
ha- opps just kidding. Hmmm Universtity of Nebraska. Flight out and back to Pennsylvania. Big corporate convention (4 days total) for theatres. Why Nebraska I haven't got a clue. 5000 for the show (one hour.) I also had to set up a booth and promote the 'magic of theatre.' Plus travel. I enjoyed that one; and I probably had my best audience there too. Huge huge performing arts theatre on the college grounds. The Lied Center Theatre. So I made out ok... best regards, Matt Tomasko

Once I donated $50 to the little sisters of the poor to let me do a show at their convent for retired nuns. Hey wait a minute, Eric did you mean when people pay me? I would only brag about that kind of stuff to my wife.

Skip I thought he was just asking out of curiosity......why do you seem to think there is a problem with the question?
I think he is just starting to move up to this level and is excited about it. That is not a problem if you ask me. No more than the guy learning a double lift and finally getting it right. Just because the topic is MONEY is it taboo? Why discourage his excitment? We are here to encourage. Eric way to go buddy!

Personally, I just think its in bad taste to discuss (brag?) about this fee or that. Discussing fees in general as in how to set a fee or negotiate a fee I can accept. But this is borderline bragging which is just bad form...in my opinion. So, why should we stop at comparing our inflated paychecks. Let's also compare our trophy wives, killer cars, spacious homes, masculine prides...
I generally try to be positive and supportive...but this topic struck a nerve. My opinion. Ya'll do as you like. Grrr, Skip :o)

Largest contract: $7000 (15 shows)
Highest Single Fee: $1500 for one 20 minute show Average Fee: $350 Look on my conservative "get a real job" relative's face when he realised I make more then him for doing half the work with twice the fun: Priceless. |

I tend to agree with Skip on this issue. Perhaps a better approach would be to discuss why you where able to command a high fee. What was the value that you provided for a client that justified the high fee? How can one deliver increase the perceived (and actual) value of their show? That might be helpful.

One thing I might add...I was memeber of a photography group and we were not allowed to discuss pricing at all. The fear of the FTC claiming price fixing stopped it all. We could discuss how to figure out prices, but never what the price should be.

Ugh- I knew it, I knew it, I knew it! Pricing questions never seem to be favorable. But Jim Snack has a good thought. Discuss why you are able to price the show at the price you did. I really dislike discussing prices myself. It's no business of other people; in my opinion. We're all in it for the same reason- because we like magic, and just enjoy entertaining. Yes? No? At least I am. The simple token of coin will always be an issue. Tipping will always be an issue. The fact that he/she charged more and did a simple thumb tip vanish will always be an issue. Doing free shows will alway irritate some. Not rehearsing a piece of magic, but yet performing it for a paying audience will always frost someone's cupcakes. Fact is- some people can get away with it. It's all business. Business is supreme. I love the business side to magic. So, I'm up for a discussion on how I got this once only- and that's it- payment.
How? Heck if I know. I don't even understand how someone from Nebraska got my business card. I live in Pennsylvania. Amish country 'ish.' Why did I charge that price? Well consider the time that I'd be there. Four days total. Fly back on the fifth day. I only did one show. And it happened to be on the evening of the third day. So, I spent two whole days just lounging around in a room. No cable. Boo hoo I know, but for me it was a waste of time. So; that was time spent on my time. I could've had other shows during that time period and flown out the morning of the third day. But no- they had me there two days before. I considered that when pricing. They bought my time. Next was the show. My usual stage show. Lasting one hour. Didn't bring much of the big stuff, but still did a show- the show they asked for. They loved it. I had fun- they had fun- everyone was happy; no complaints. Then there was the promotional booth. Now anyone who does trade shows here knows that in order to keep a client interested in what you have to say- you have to snag them and reel them in. Which required tremendous effort on my part to gain a constant crowd. I performed close up/stand up styled magic in a convention hall. Got creative at some parts. I was the center/themed event. Meaning the 'magic of theatre' was the theme- and I was the guy representing the magic. They guy who could create and delight the crowd of a couple thousand theatre goers from all over the United States, Hawaii, and Japan. SO- considering the ammount of people that I'd be interracting with; uped the price. Trade show lasted all day. 9AM till 7PM. Then there was the flight home. I always fly UNITED- and for some reason there prices were rather large at that time. It was during the summer months. Around the end of July. Personally- I dislike flying. SO- price was raised. I just can't handle being on an airplane. Sorry, but no thanks. I'd rather take a train or drive. And considering I had to fly in the air a total of four times (two stops coming in to Nebraska, two stops returning to BWI airport in Baltimore, MD.) uped the price. Was this a lot of money? For me- I was satisfied. For the convention- no not at all. This is a once a year convention; their budget can easily accomondate. Is it truly a big deal? No. Why did I respond to this post? The guy asked the question and I thought I'd give my personal input. Was it bragging? Not at all- that kind of show hasn't reoccured yet. And it's been three years since I've been to Nebraska. So, here's my next question to all of you. How did you get the inflated prices you got? Remember- it's all business. as always, best regards, Matt Tomasko

When you are guilty of price fixing the goverment can invoke a Taft Hartley injunction. I don't know what that means, but I think it's not good. Al

But if we did talk about fees, I bet there would be some whoppers.
I think it would probably be very misleading, even harmful, to many with the different venues, levels of experience, locations, etc., etc. Also, what if the client found out you were bragging about it? Tom

I would have to agree. I think the better topic or issue would be what did you do in regards to marketing yourself and your show to directly change the perceived value in the mind of the prospect and client?

I concure once again. Here- this might help some people with marketing concerns. http://www.success-in-magic.com/ Jim's work pertaining to the business side of magic is very insightful. Good resource there. Also- I'm surprised no one mentioned the book, "Maximum Entertainment." Great great book.

Run to the men's room! Hahahaha! That's great!
As for price fixing, I think that could only stand up if we all chose to abide by an agreed-to rate. Magicians are so cutthroat, all they'd want to do is find the other guy's price so they could beat it by $50. |

I didn't mean it as bragging at all... Why not talk about it? We don't know eachother, we don't live near one another, we have different styles etc. Whats the harm? Taboo? come on now...
