I tend to agree with Skip on this issue. Perhaps a better approach would be to discuss why you where able to command a high fee. What was the value that you provided for a client that justified the high fee? How can one deliver increase the perceived (and actual) value of their show? That might be helpful.

One thing I might add...I was memeber of a photography group and we were not allowed to discuss pricing at all. The fear of the FTC claiming price fixing stopped it all. We could discuss how to figure out prices, but never what the price should be.

Ugh- I knew it, I knew it, I knew it! Pricing questions never seem to be favorable. But Jim Snack has a good thought. Discuss why you are able to price the show at the price you did. I really dislike discussing prices myself. It's no business of other people; in my opinion. We're all in it for the same reason- because we like magic, and just enjoy entertaining. Yes? No? At least I am. The simple token of coin will always be an issue. Tipping will always be an issue. The fact that he/she charged more and did a simple thumb tip vanish will always be an issue. Doing free shows will alway irritate some. Not rehearsing a piece of magic, but yet performing it for a paying audience will always frost someone's cupcakes. Fact is- some people can get away with it. It's all business. Business is supreme. I love the business side to magic. So, I'm up for a discussion on how I got this once only- and that's it- payment.
How? Heck if I know. I don't even understand how someone from Nebraska got my business card. I live in Pennsylvania. Amish country 'ish.' Why did I charge that price? Well consider the time that I'd be there. Four days total. Fly back on the fifth day. I only did one show. And it happened to be on the evening of the third day. So, I spent two whole days just lounging around in a room. No cable. Boo hoo I know, but for me it was a waste of time. So; that was time spent on my time. I could've had other shows during that time period and flown out the morning of the third day. But no- they had me there two days before. I considered that when pricing. They bought my time. Next was the show. My usual stage show. Lasting one hour. Didn't bring much of the big stuff, but still did a show- the show they asked for. They loved it. I had fun- they had fun- everyone was happy; no complaints. Then there was the promotional booth. Now anyone who does trade shows here knows that in order to keep a client interested in what you have to say- you have to snag them and reel them in. Which required tremendous effort on my part to gain a constant crowd. I performed close up/stand up styled magic in a convention hall. Got creative at some parts. I was the center/themed event. Meaning the 'magic of theatre' was the theme- and I was the guy representing the magic. They guy who could create and delight the crowd of a couple thousand theatre goers from all over the United States, Hawaii, and Japan. SO- considering the ammount of people that I'd be interracting with; uped the price. Trade show lasted all day. 9AM till 7PM. Then there was the flight home. I always fly UNITED- and for some reason there prices were rather large at that time. It was during the summer months. Around the end of July. Personally- I dislike flying. SO- price was raised. I just can't handle being on an airplane. Sorry, but no thanks. I'd rather take a train or drive. And considering I had to fly in the air a total of four times (two stops coming in to Nebraska, two stops returning to BWI airport in Baltimore, MD.) uped the price. Was this a lot of money? For me- I was satisfied. For the convention- no not at all. This is a once a year convention; their budget can easily accomondate. Is it truly a big deal? No. Why did I respond to this post? The guy asked the question and I thought I'd give my personal input. Was it bragging? Not at all- that kind of show hasn't reoccured yet. And it's been three years since I've been to Nebraska. So, here's my next question to all of you. How did you get the inflated prices you got? Remember- it's all business. as always, best regards, Matt Tomasko

When you are guilty of price fixing the goverment can invoke a Taft Hartley injunction. I don't know what that means, but I think it's not good. Al

But if we did talk about fees, I bet there would be some whoppers.
I think it would probably be very misleading, even harmful, to many with the different venues, levels of experience, locations, etc., etc. Also, what if the client found out you were bragging about it? Tom

I would have to agree. I think the better topic or issue would be what did you do in regards to marketing yourself and your show to directly change the perceived value in the mind of the prospect and client?

I concure once again. Here- this might help some people with marketing concerns. http://www.success-in-magic.com/ Jim's work pertaining to the business side of magic is very insightful. Good resource there. Also- I'm surprised no one mentioned the book, "Maximum Entertainment." Great great book.

Run to the men's room! Hahahaha! That's great!
As for price fixing, I think that could only stand up if we all chose to abide by an agreed-to rate. Magicians are so cutthroat, all they'd want to do is find the other guy's price so they could beat it by $50. |

I didn't mean it as bragging at all... Why not talk about it? We don't know eachother, we don't live near one another, we have different styles etc. Whats the harm? Taboo? come on now...

Eric,
I regularly try to be the nicest guy on earth, that's my motto, 'Be nice!' but this thread has put me into a bad mood. I heard someone once say, 'Never ask a women her age or a man her age...' to which I thought, 'You're an idiot.' People who are unwilling to share that kind of information are usually witholding that info in a bid to try and make themselves feel powerful or to try and manipulate you. Why on earth would I not tell someone I make? What do I achieve by not sharing that information? Anyone with an average intelligence can look up any occupation on the net so what's the big deal? Let me say this. If you're embarressed about what you make, grow up. In my mind, mature people don't get embarressed. If you think what you make is no one else's business, grow up. Most people can tell what you make by looking at your shoes. And if you're unwilling to share or contribute, perhaps you should stay silent. There's other places in this world where your negativity is more than welcome. That said- when I worked at MacDonald's 20 years ago I made $3.65 an hour. I charge $150 an hour as a magician and have a much better time doing it. If you want to charge $200 an hour after reading this I fully support you and hope you get it! I hope everyone is doing well, django

The Café is full of tricks, techniques, ideas designed to get more money and yet we all get nervous and jittery when it comes to talking hard figures (putting our money where out mouths are so to speak)!
What is wrong with sharing, with pride, our high fees and business successes? |

The only thing I would say as a note of caution is should someone search for your name on the web, your posts in the magic Café may pop up at the top of the list. Matt your own webiste is 4th on google, Magic Café is 6th. I know most people wouldn't do this, but someone may, would be a shame if someone watched a show and thought I want to know more about that guy and found something here.
By the way I picked Matt as 1)your name is unique enough to work on google 2) I don't think any of your posts I have seen are anything other than helpful, and this one if found would not offend as it justifys your fee clearly to the client. So hopefully I don't offend by using you as an example. Nicholas, the 'priceless' post was wonderful. Though in the interests of dodgy prizes 'I make more THEN him' of course this doesn't beat spelling grammar wrong! To Skip, I have no trophy wife (came second again, and they just give you a ribbon!), my killer car is doing 25 to life for murder, my box is plenty big enough since I added the shoebox extension...but too far Sir when you ask about my masucline pride! That is too far, my lions are my own business. Would kill to make $50,000....that is an offer PM with targets name and I accept PayPal, reciepts given for taxman on request |

When you turn pro - you may change your mind on discussing your prices. Personally It's no ones business but your own and the worst thing you can do is publish it on a forum so It will be here forever If they type your name into google and this pops up price $xxx stupid. I think the quote on "witholding that info in a bid to try and make themselves feel powerful or to try and manipulate you" I don't think you have any idea what your going on about MABY it's not about embarisement maby I don't want my competition knowing whjat I charge or would be customers accidently finding this post on the web. GEES I feel the force and I may have to turn into Darth David again |

Django, sorry to have annoyed you...such is the power of opinion. Jim, as usual, gave a far more rational voice to my thoughts. I can sit here and tell you all that I once made...let's say... $3,500 for a series of shows. So what? First - this could be a flat out lie set to superficially inflate an already out-of-control ego...and it could lead some kid just starting out in the business to think that he or she can command these rates with a set of canned jokes, a Professor's Nightmare and a thumbtip. This hurts us all.
Instead of bragging about the size of your paycheck follow Matt's excellent example. Explain what it was about this particular client, event or show that commanded this incredible fee. This is positive. This is instructional. This is constructive. This is the spirit of The Magic Café. This way the novice and the working pro can both learn something from your approach to earning this fee. It ceases to be bragging and becomes sharing. Sharing is good. To me...and this is just my opinion...simply stating "I earned a whopping $5,000 for a single hour show" is no different from saying "I scored six barmaids last night." Big Whoop! Crass, crude and who cares? Tell us how we can get our share of barmaids... er.... higher fees! Skip
