I am wondering when a palmo would be better than a hank ball and when a hank ball would be better than a hank ball.
I currently use a hank ball for productions and vanishes. I know that it can be used for "dying" or switching silks as well. I guess that the palmo would be better for switches than the hank ball. I use a simplex dye tube for switches currently. Will A palmo hold more silk than a hank ball allowing for bigger productions? Thanks, Bruce

I've tried the palmo vs the hank ball. It really depends on which hank ball you are using. The hank ball from Duane Laflin has more capacity than the ball from Morressy and the Laflin hank ball will hold more silks than the palmo. The palmo I have found is easier to palm but in Jack Chanin's silk book Grand Finale, he suggest you use advisive tape on the hank ball to help with palming. I use flesh colored latex on the hank ball and palmo and it works great. The gimmick will not go anywhere. Just my two cents.

Duane and I talked at length about the hank ball. The kick out move he suggests is not possible when the ball is fully loaded. Chanin had a lot of good ideas in his silk routine. But the most important thing was that it had to be learnt in segments so perfect it. The tape or a light spray adhesive works well. Lets also not forget the original use of the monofilament line.
I think the Palmo is more verstile than the hank ball. The only thing I would use the hank ball for is a production of many smaller silks from bare hands. Just my 1 1/2" cents worth. Richard

Richard,
Help me out. I have both and I can get 3 18" silks in my hank ball but only 2 18" silks in my palmo. What am I doing wrong? David W. |

First there are different sizes of Palmos. Laflin's size is a little bigger than Rice's. (I may be wrong on this.) It is not major but still different in size.
When I load a hank ball, I rotate the ball as I stuff the silks in. It loads the silk kind of around the outside of the ball letting you get more silks in. I do the same with a palmo. I hope that makes some kind of sense. If you just push the silk into the tube, all the folds from the silk are in the center of the tube while the outer edges are relatively empty. Let me know if this helps. Richard

Richard,
Is that what you were trying to explain about the x-ray of my brain in my skull? (If there is anything there, it is in the smallest part, the center?) |

I have both the Palmo and Hank Ball from Laflin. I am able to get three 18" silks in the Hank Ball and still do the move as explained in Duane's video. I believe this can be accomplished because of the way Richard says to load it (Duane also uses teaches this method). I can force three 18" silks into the Palmo but I am not able to do the move as he describes. I can not seem to load the Palmo in the same manner as Richard describes.
I guess I better keep working on it. Richard and Bob thanks for all your guys help here at the Café. ChrisG

When the Palmo or Hank ball is full, you cannot work it on the thumb. It has to be classic palmed or edge palmed.

I like the hank ball, I try putting in the diamond cut silks. How do you get the silks to come out one by one? I pull the first one out but the other corner gets stuck in it.
I don't want to tie them together, I must be loading them wrong. |

The hank ball is used to make silk color changes and to produce, or vanish scarves. Duane Laflin's hank ball is the best one out there. It's made out of metal and is flesh colored. It is much better than Rice's. If you're not going to use Duane Laflin's hank ball than by all means buy a Palmo. Duane Laflin also makes a great metal flesh colored palmo too.
I've used them both and to me Duane Laflin's hank ball seems to hold more silk than the Palmo because it's larger. It will easily hold three 18 inch silk scarves, or eight 12 inch silk scarves and it is also much easier to manipulate than the Palmo. Try them both and you will find out that the hank ball is a perfect fit in the hand and that you can easily control and hide it. The hank ball is more versatile than the Palmo. You can also use sponge ball handlings and routines with the hank ball plus you can use the hank ball for many other magic effects, like the slow long salt pour for example. Gerard Posted: Dec 26, 2005 4:18pm Fccfp: You may also want to consider taking a look a Rice Simplex tube. Rice's Simplex is a clever gimmick has been called the fake with 101 uses. It's kind of like a t***b t*p for silk magicians. Some silk magicians prefer this using this method for certain silk effects instead of a hank ball or palmo. It's a great silk device to have. You can do different effects with the simplex than you can with a palmo or hank ball. If you decide on a buying Palmo, take a look at the Rice Palmo. It is smaller than most Palmo's but it will still work with an 18 inch silk. This makes it easier to hide from your spectators and Rice Palmo may be a better size for you than the traditional plamos. Rice (Silk King Studios) have best dye tubes around and they carry some of the best silk tricks, effects and apparatuses for silk workers.

Would someone compare the Palmo Ball from Duane Laflin and Morrissey with the one from Johnson?

Do you find that 18" silks are too small for stage work with either of these devices.
I would be concerned about the visibility and impact of an 18". A 24" looks great on a stage and dove work is much easier. James Adamson http://www.seam2006.com

No doubt 24" silks are used by pros on stage for a lot of reasons. The 18" is popular because it is closest in size to a man's handkerchief. The 24" is nearly twice as large. For dove magicians the size is also important.
Mass produced tricks are usually 12" or 18" silks. A 24" silk is the largest I can palm off. For palming, I prefer 18" silks and that is what most props are made to handle. The impact of a 24" is much greater than an 18". Size of the magician is important too. Two 24" tied at the corner are about all I can show and keep it off the floor. I'm 5' 9". Tony Slydini was smaller than me. He used 21" silks. James is much taller. Longer arms must be handy to have. Bob Sanders Magic By Sander |

Gerard, I have the simplex and like it very much. I use it w/two in and one out. You're right, it handles much like a TT and in some ways is more versatile as it can be used with other fingers. I use my middle finger, no insult intended I have an old plastic one, I think from Tenyo, for 9" silks that I can fit a diamond in and prefer to use that when working closer to the audience. Smaller size, easier to conceal & ditch. Bob, One more time, how does one measure diamond silks? I fit seven of them in my palmo. That probably gives a bigger "display" than regular square silks. While we are on the topic, I sometimes have trouble w/the production of the silks. They don't always come out like tissues from a box. Sometimes when I pull out a silk, the next one does not pop up. After the first silk is loaded I take the end of that one and the end of the next one end wrap them around each other. Like tying your shoes w/ an extra twist. I then proceed to push the silk into the ball following the curve of the ball. Any suggestions? Thanks, Bruce

That's a nice diamond cut silks table Bob.
What's a good momme to use for silk magic Bob? Do you think that 8-10 momme silks are alright for general silk magic or should silk magicians use the thicker 10-12 momme silks? Gerard
