What you call a mentalist without an audience?
A magician? Sorry, but I am giving up magic for mental ism and I couldn't resist a parting shot.... I have been trying to decide whether to buy the effect from Richard's site or make it up myself. Have pretty much decided to just buy it. But that is one of the things I love about Richards DVDs, he gives you the information so you have that option. The other thing I like is the material. I now how DVDs 1-7 and they are all pretty meaty stuff. BroDavid

Bro' David, don't disparage magic! Since you're an Osterlind fan, you'll notice that he blends magic and mentalism with what LOOKS like no effort. As a matter of fact, now that you have his Mind Mysteries DVDs, might I strongly recommend his books: *Making Magic Real,* *Making Real Magic,* *Essays,* and *Principles of Magic* for some strong advice and discussion of just that?
Shucks, as long as I'm recommending things, do yourself a favor and pick up the *Easy to Master Mental Mysteries* DVDs. You'll find some heavy-duty looks at how to bring classic effects up-to-date, and how many of these classic effects don't need updating at all. (Though I must admit that Richard's update of Annemann's "A Question and an Answer" is just so much simpler and cleaner!) *jeep! --Chet

Dear Mr Osterlind,
Since I was facing east when you instructed me to "keep going," I continued in that direction. It is now getting quite wet and even colder than the snowdrifts. I would like to ask if it might be possible for me to turn around and go back home now, as I'm beginning to find breathing difficult. *jeep! --Chet (gurgle)

I'm going to ask a question I often complain about people asking...but here goes..
How clean is the performer...ummm...generally within the routine? I appreciate this is often a question that leans "over the fence" and "into the back yard" of disclosure so could someone perhaps PM me? I sometimes perform (seemingly impromptu) informally, VERY close up for friends in a pub or at restaurants and people tend to grab slips of paper if they can spot them or conversely get suspicious if I seem hardas*ed about them not seeing/having a look at anything in such an intimate setting. Does anyone have any thoughts on this kind of "cleaness" that they feel ok telling me about?

In reference to the number of times the performer must go into the audience to pass out and then retrieve the slips, I’ll offer what I’ve been doing for the past few years. I have found that having the slips and pens out in the audience before the show begins. The way I do this varies depending on the venue I am performing in. I mainly perform at large corporate events and my own touring theater shows.
For the corporate events I speak to the coordinator(s) of the event and explain that I need to have the slips and pens passed out after dinner just before I perform. You don’t want your slips and pens on the table while they eat. It looks a bit tacky and people may simple toss them. This also gives a very professional image to your show I believe. For my theater shows I simply have the slips and pens passed out as people enter the theater. Each person gets a 4 page program along with the slips and the pen. A word about the pens I use. I have a large number of nice looking promotional pens made with my logo and web site url printed on them. I use those for my theater shows. I have another batch made with my logo and my agents contact info on them. These are very cheap and serve as a nice little piece of promotional material especially at the corporate events where you’ve got 500 people that will need a pen throughout their weekend event. Concerning the filling out of the slips. My theater show is 2 hours long with a 15 minute intermission. 5 minutes before the intermission is over pre-recorded instructions play three times before the intro music to the second half begins. They are instructed to fill out the cards and pass them to the center isle. There is so much to do with the slips to enhance the information and reading. Let your imagination run with this and try out as many things as make good sense to you. Also, study Banacheck’s work on the process of revealing the information. That is where the real work is. You should have a great method for getting the information, but what makes this routine, like nearly all of mentalism, is in the revealing of the information. Sadly, most videos and books do not offer much on this. I hope my rambling help at least a few. Regards, Brandon Cross |

Banacheck’s Psychological Subtleties has a great section titled Subtle Q&A. The section is packet with exceptional ideas that the astute reader can built greatly upon. This section should be studied and built upon by anyone interested in performing strong a Q&A piece.
The Q&A act will be given depth by the manner you reveal the information as well as become a vehicle for you to connect with your audience and communicate your character and sub text to the audience. However, it does not end there. The mentalist can build greatly upon the information given and reveal things that where never written down. Moreover, the mentalist can give the illusion that what he is revealing was never written down. I think many make the mistake in thinking this is to simply through people of the method. This is a benefit, however, the real point is to give a real spontaneous and genuine feel to the routine. Just a few more thoughts. As you can see, this is one of my favorite pieces of mentalism and I spend a great deal of time collecting the literature and creating my own nuances and methods. I am very passionate about this kind of direct and pure mentalism. - Brandon |

So - can someone answer this - then I'll go by it anyway no doubt...
Can I have an assistant hand out all the slips to people coming into the venue at the beginning - have them fill out the slips - then have the assistant gather them up to bring to me.... Y'see I like having people escorted to their seats by a few of my assistants (I have a bunch of students involved and also stock a lot of the audience with stooges )... and I figured during the escorting phase to add some class to give them the slip then and thus get everyone involved from the get go...? Or does the performer have to be doing it all...? Thanks! Bruce

Dr Spektor:
The answer is a cautious Yes. My suggestion is that you get Vol 7 of Mind Mysteries Too. The effect is performed and explained by Richard. (Plus there are other nice performance pieces on the DVD.) If you think the effect will fit your performing style, then get it. Tony |

You can go one stage further and have all the slips and pencils ready on their seats before they even enter the room and sit down.

He mentions on the DVD that he wrote "of course Sadam did it"...
As to the mention of Banachek's book, Psychological Subleties, I would heartily recommend if you are going to do mentalism GET THIS BOOK!!! I have added several ideas to different effects in my show and WOW!! What a different response! I think Richard may attest to Banachek's wisdom in this book as well. As for Final Answer, I'm confused as to what the issue is with how many times you're going into the audience? Maybe I'm missing something, not sure... Rick

I guess if that's the issue, I think that a performer should go into the audience as much or as little as is necessary to perform their show well...

My only concern was that the effect requires the performer to start mnemonicing or make sure certain people get certain slips - to me, going in and out of the audience is fine so long as you havea good rooms et-up that allows everyone to hear you and have some sight of you as you frollick around.....
But the desc. makes it sound like the perf. needs to do all the collecting... To me, I like the concept of having everyone coming in get a slip right away as it helps draw them into the performance from the beginning as they are already investing some thought and something personal... then just collect the slips.... (I'm hoping the gimmik is just the bag and the slips - not the pens) Well, I guess I'll go buy the MM 2 ... In the meantime, anyone have other variations of what I'm talking/looking for i.e. have everyone do the Q at the beginning? (

Spek, there's nothing stopping you from having the slips at the tables if you so wish. Considering the nuances you sound like you're wanting, you might want to consider buying the effect itself (with props) http://osterlindstore.com/catalog/produc......ts_id/37
