What do you find to be a comfortable performance distance from your spectators when doing close-up magic? Also how many spectators are too many when performing close-up? My worry on that is more from an angle point of view rather than being able to play to everyone.

Depends on the trick. These are are just a few that I can think of:
Color Monte, Prof. Nightmare, Cut & Restore Rope, Thumbcuffs, Kellar Rope Tie, I do it right in their face. Even use a TT close up. I also control the angels by telling people, if you want to see what I am doing, stand over here. Sometimes the closer they stand the more they don't see.
