Not that very many people would be able to use the idea, but...
my father-in-law had a cochlear implant to help his growing deafness. That's where a hearing-aid outside the body transmits signals to a receptor implanted in the auditory nerve. It does so without a permanent "hole" because the little transmitter outside sits directly on the receiver inside, held by a magnet. I was a little surprised to see the strength of the magnet implanted in his skull just under the skin. What could a person do with a magnet implanted just under the skin, anchored in bone or not? Does this spark any ideas? I will feel a bit guilty if this comment sends the "body modification" gang into a renewed frenzy of surgeries. |

Ross, what you are talking about is rare earth or ceramic magnets. I don't know about implantability, but it sounds cool! The only problem I see is magnetic disturbance to TVs, tapes, credit cards, magnetic storage media... etc etc. Otherwise it does sound like something the bod mod scene would go nuts over.

Well Nipp, wasn't there a BME article about implanting the magnets under the skin. (I can't remember where I saw it on there, but it was there)
Granted I don't know what will happen at airport security, stores ect. |
