A professional juggler always makes it look like anyone can do it, but don't fool yourself it is easy only after you develop perfect form. I strongly suggest you find a jugglers club near you, or you can teach yourself and stumble along for ever.

If you can learn basic three ball juggling, then clubs will take the same amount of practicing to master. You have to start with one and work our way up as you do with balls.

Club juggling is tough, and VERY different from ball juggling... It takes time and dedication to get it smooth and clean... The best thing with clubs is to have a mentor to help you along, otherwise, as Al says, you'll be chasing them clubs for a LONG time. Prof. Piper :juggle:

Try it for a week on your own and you will soon agree with the professor and myself. One more important fact is cheap clubs are much harder to juggle than good ones. Al

I have to also agree that joining a club is probably your best bet. Although, if you can't get to one find a convention and join a club juggling workshop. At least you'll be able to ask questions and actually see the technique.
Once you know what to do it just takes practice. I'm not saying you can't learn from books, videos or DVDs though. I did it this way. But I didn't get the pattern solid until the flaws were ironed out by someone who could already juggle. If you decide to go it alone I'd suggest getting The Compendium of Club Juggling by Charlie Dancy. I think Amazon carries it. Also, try to think of the club pattern as being 3D, compared to a ball pattern being 2D. I say this because with balls you only really worry about up and down. Clubs spin! Therefore you have to worry about forward and back too. I hope this helps.

MrMystic what are you talking about?
Clubs generally take about as much time to learn as one more ball. E.g. 4 clubs is about as hard as 5 balls. The problem with most people who start learning clubs is that they try to juggle them as if they were balls and end up with high but narrow patterns where a low but wider pattern is preferable. The Haggis McLeod video is quite a good starting point if you can't make it to a club but really you want to talk to others who can point out your mistakes in a helpful way. One tip, learn to juggle clubs and then learn to look through the pattern at other things it will help your fluency and if you get into it your passing. Nigel

That's the way I learned. I had a three ball cascade down and bought some pins. Started flipping one back and forth, went to two and when I had that down I tried three. Although I had seen people do pins before, I didn't have anyone showing me how to do it, I just learned it the same way I learned balls. One step at a time.

A lot of people learn to juggle clubs like balls and then have to spend a lot of time correcting the problems inherent in this approach. As an example of why this approach is wrong, consider an under the leg throw. From a high narrow pattern this is a really difficult trick from a low wide pattern it is relatively simple as you basically keep the pattern the same and there is little chance of collision.
One thing to think about when learning clubs is 'the dip'. You catch the club and then dip it down whilst turning the wrist before throwing thus changing the orientation of the club by 90 degrees. This is not something that you learn with balls. Another tip is where to hold the club, that is you should hold it closer to the middle than the end when learning or you're likely to get the club in your face. As Roslyn says the best way to learn is from someone else, who can do it properly. So a club is your best bet. Nigel

Nigel is right if you teach yourself to juggle clubs (and they are called CLUBS) you will never advance, and you will always tire quickly if you have bad form. A juggling club is where the acumulated knowledge of thousand of years of juggling can be tapped into. A self taught juggler will have to learn those thousands of years of knowledge through thousands of years of trial and error. Mrmystic a real juggler handles clubs effortlessly, and is able to wrap them around his body while smileing at the audience, you can not stumbled upon this skill by accident. Al

I learned how to juggle clubs on my own, and it didn't take forever. I didn't find it much harder than learning a difficult new trick or something with balls (it's just something that takes practice). Starting with one, then two, then finally three seemed to work great. Anyway, just my own personal experience, although I would assume that joining a club would certainly make things a little faster initially. One way or the other you still need to spend the time practing.

You will note in my post that I said that you can learn clubs like you learn balls BUT you end up with a pattern more suited to balls than clubs. You then need to learn how to throw properly. Sometimes it takes people years to correct all the problems they have from learning in this way. Take peoples advice and learn to do it properly at the start and save yourself a lot of problems (including muscle strain, tendonitis, back problems ...)

I will agree it has taken me some time to break bad club habits so that I can move on to tricks.
Nigel thank you for pointing this out although this was pionted out @ a clown alley before your remarks confirms my mistakes unfortunatley I had juggled 3 clubs for some time before finding this out and had worked it down to a tight but narrow pattern I am told a tight but narrow pattern is better for unicycle does any one agree I have been on the uni for a couple years and can juggle 3 balls but have not started to work the clubs yet Topper

Club juggling should always maka a the V shape in front of your chest, below eye level so you can look through the pattern, you should have your back streight, and not reaching for the clubs, make it look effortless, with a big smile on your face. No matter where you want to go with three club juggling this is step one. Al

High and narrow makes you look up. Low and wide allows you to look through the patern. It will take some time to transfer the energy from your upper arm to your wrist, but once you get your wrist's rolling you will have mastered that effortless look of a professional juggler, and you will be ready for chops.
