OK, let’s see if I can review this product without giving anything away. I have one of the first ones that were available, and yes, they do come from overseas. The spelling errors in the entire instruction sheet are atrocious. (I hope I spelled that right…Wait, let me look it up). OK, I did…first off, if you think you know how this thing works, you are probably right. It utilizes a “newer” principal in magic. There are tricks on the market that any magician who keeps up with “what’s new” will recognize. Within the past few years or so this kind of effect has become popular. (folks like Sylvester the Jester) I hate to condemn (check my spelling) an effect to it’s death without fair trial, and this is on of those effects. I have not worked with mine enough to say if its’ flaws can be fixed or not, but I will say this…the effect “right out of the box” does not work. At least it doesn’t work for me.
The two straws supplied do not “appear magically” or quickly. I need to move my mouth around to shake it and have even tried blowing hard to help it along. The straws are too thin. That said, maybe different and sturdier straws can be found that work better. Which leads me to my belief that this effect would have been better presented as a manuscript. It’s kind of like “Healed & Sealed” being sent to you with a can of coke. Also, I live in New England and it’s snowing. My lips are dry and chapped. Now, I just cut my lip practicing this effect. That’s not the fault of the manufacturer; it’s just the nature of the beast. Kind of like getting arthritis from back-palming too much. My bottom line, (hey, I like this review lingo), if this effect has a place in your show, coo. If you can make it work. (Be on the look-out for thicker straws). You cannot leave this in your pocket and “do it later”, unless you rework (replace) the straws. It is not a close-up effect because you cannot talk before the trick is performed. I also don’t quite know how you would “open” with an effect that basically gives the audience the “silent treatment” in this way. It is not a “grand” production so, stage work limits it. Hold on, excuse me, I walked away for a moment to greet my wife. I excitedly showed her the new tricks I got. Then she read my post here and said I was being too nice, so I will conclude with this: If you don’t mind buying the two gimmicks that I see every day, along with a set of mediocre instructions (17.99), buy this. In all fairness, I have a place in my act for this and I will rework the concept for stage. That said, I’m going to bed. By the way, the new effect “silent treatment” came in today from Jon Allen. WOW. Now we’re talking magic. |
