My oldest son will be 3 years old in 2 weeks. We are having a very small birthday party at our house. Some of his cousins will be there who are between 5-12 years old. There will only be about 6-8 children there as well as their parents.
I would like to do a brief show for my son and his cousins. I was thinking about doing a rabbit in the hat routine (Dave Risely) and Vern the Bird. I would appreciate any suggestions that would be appropriate for my son's age, perhaps effects that are more geared towards comedy than magic. I was also perhaps thinking of nesting wands and a magic coloring book. Would you do the rabbit in the hat routine last or first? Thank you very much. Michael

Rabbit in the Hat last because it is so powerful
All your suggestions are good for this age group.

I would do a sponge ball or multiplying rabbit routine. You can do a miser's dream type effect. If you have a coin wand, use the routine in Bobo's Coin Magic. 20th Century silks can give you a routine that you can involve a lot of kids in.
Basically, I would keep it visual and simple. I do a bit with silks that keep popping up out a phantom tube kids love it. Sucker tricks probably won't go over too well as they are a little young. Next year maybe. Fraiddy Cat rabbit is a good one. I agree with Dennis and close with the rabbit in the hat. It's strong, visual and traditional. I think the kids will remember it a long time. And that is what you want. Richard

Are you using some sort of production item in your show? Square circle, dove pan, whatever?
Consider filling it with, among other things, a length of stringed beads. These are inexpensive and easy to find around the holidays. Connect 3 or 4 strands so you have one long one. After you produce the first 2 feet of the strand drop it. Gravity will pull out the rest. Makes a noisy very animated visual cascade that little kids delight in watching. A reaction out of proportion to the effort.

Thank you all for your most helpful suggestions. Right now my list of effects to do is as follows:
puppet routine (Vern or a moneky puppet that has a tongue that shoots out and squeeks) PB&J Picture in Frame or Instant Art Magic Coloring Book Nesting Wands Blooming Blossom Santa's Chimney (maybe squared circle) Chick Pan producing Candy Dave Risely Rabbit in Hat routine Thank you again for your much needed help and courtesy. I hope my son and his cousins like the show. Michael

OP: stop with what you originally planned (rabbit last) - their attention span is JUST ABOUT that long, and their ability to understand the idea of magic is JUST ABOUT attuned to the effects you have chosen. Don't be tempted to overdo.
Plus, remember, you're looking at this not only as a magician, but (how 'bout this for 'how the other side sees things?') as the birthday kid's parent - it's not all about the magic show, it's all about the birthday. |

Ross,
From the list I stated in my previous post, are there any effects that you would not consider approrpiate for a 3 year old? Do you think this list is too long? Thank you very much. Michael

I might take out the chick pan as once you produce the Candy, the show will be over.
The picture frame (if you have the Happy Birthday insert) would be stronger I think than the coloring book. I would not do both. I agree that their attention span is going to be short . Work quick and visually and then let them go for the cake. Maybe as party favors, you could figure out some child safe little magic tricks to give them to play with. Nothing very difficult or hard, just something they might want to play with. Richard

Mr. Hughes,
Thank yo very much for your comments and suggestions. I will take out the coloring book and use the birthday insert. With regards to the picture frame, I will be doing the picture frame with the nest of wands as done by Mr. Dave Risely. Do you think the picture frame is better or more entertaining for the little ones than Instant Art? Thank you again for your much needed help. I really appreciate it. Best wishes, Michael

I think both are entertaining for the little ones. However, you are doing a birthday party why not use the birthday party insert?
There is no right or wrong answer. Do what you feel comfortable with. I would again suggest sponge balls in the hand with two little ones. I remember doing if for my nephew when he was about this age. He walked around with little pieces of paper trying to do the same thing for weeks. Nothing fancy, just one in your hand and it flys into their hand. Richard
