How does this compare to Tommy Wonder's Card to Ring Box from Visions of Wonder. Thank-you,

With Mr. Wonder's Card to Ring Box you can show the folded card inside the box and shake the box. The folded card can be seen to move around inside the box when you shake it. The folded card is then dumped into your hand. However, immediately after teh card is dumped into your hand, you cannot show the inside of the ring box. With Kennedy's Mystery Box (1 or 2), you can show a folded card inside the box but cannot shake the box to show that the card is lose. After you dump the card into your hand, you can show that the box is empty.

I saw Frank Thurston's handling, as he described earlier, at the Alameda County Fair recently....It is clean and brilliant, and practically sleight-free for those who want to do the trick and don't want to do any finger-flinging. One of those rare tricks that are worth far more than the money it takes to buy it.

Hi Michael,

Thank-you very much I was really curious what the difference was. I have the Visions of Wonder DVD's on the way and had heard so much about Mr. Wonder's incredible handling of this routine. I may still end up with a Mystery Box, bottom line I really, really miss my Destination Box. Hands down the best piece of magic I have ever owned.

Hi Tom,
Thank-you very much for your insights as well. Frank's handling sounds like a really good one. Any chance he'll share that with us here on the Café someday?

Larry Davidson's handling of the Mystery Box, called "The BIg Mystery" is on his Scripted Insanity DVD Volume 1 and it's brilliant.

Joe, I'm glad that I could help and THANK YOU for the good wishes!!!!

The Roberto Giobbi Lecture DVD is another good source for the folded card to box plot ( I love the plot and am interested in what the great thinkers have done, folks lke Tommy Wonder, Larry Davidson , Frank Garcia and the Maestro, Fred Kaps ) so I collect as many sources on it as I can.

One thing I have noticed is that the quality can vary from box to box. I have two, one is really well made. The other has a mark on the gaff as well as some black paint missing to conceal the gaff's edges. It is still acceptable, as no one is really going to notice.

With respect to the gift wrapping idea, I have an idea that I've been playing with, and that is just to tie a ribbon around the box, with the bow on top. This way the box can't be opened prematurely, the reason for having it stays, and it really would only take a few seconds to re-tie the bow at the end.

You could even re-set the box as you tie the ribbon on... Smile

JJP-
His handling is described on the previous page. The deck goes behind his back and he tries to find the card 'by feel'. PM him, I think he'd share the details of his handling. It's good.

For another approach to the mercury fold, see The Berg Book, page 224, bottom.

Hi Tom,

Thank-you very much for the help I will try to PM him and I will also check out the Berg Book. At this point it's fair to say I have some what of an addiction to bill or card to impossible location.

I have to say, I contacted John Kennedy through the site inquiring if there was a discount if I pruchased two MBII in bloodwood ($120 each). I recieved a response that said:
Quote:
Dear Sir,

Due to agreements we have with other shops that sell our products, we may
not discount any of our items. Thank you for your interest in John Kennedy
Magic.

Sincerely,
Mai

Well, at least they might have offered free shipping. So my response is that they lost the sale. They sell wholesale to dealers and I imagine if I offered to take the items from a dealers stock that the dealer might offer a discount. Oh well. Now I wouldn't buy them on principle; I too am in business and if someone buys multiple bookings a discount is a way to say thank you and often worth it as you don't have to guess or worry about the extra sale.

Carlo-
I don't understand why you are angry. They are not allowed to discount. It's an agreement that is in place between their customers: dealers, and they are honorably honoring that agreement.

There is nothing wrong with simply going to your own dealer and asking for a multiple-buy discount. You'd probably get it. Did you think that they LIKED not making that sale? They missed a sale by not discounting, by honoring their agreements.

Why would you be angry over ethical people being ethical?

Thanks Chris. It's one of my strongest workers, but I have to be honest and say that I'm surprised that a number of magicians have said that it's one of their favorite effects on my DVDs. I'm surprised because the effect is not a magician fooler in my opinion and many hobbyests (the vast majority of magicians) only like effects that fool them or that they can use to fool other magicians. I know that you perform professionally and I'm glad that you're getting use of out the routine.

Best, Larry

Larry, I think when Magcians buy DVD's, they do like to see something that fries them. It kind of makes us Laymen for a moment.

But, I also think we want to find a gem that is a worker ( thank you Mike Close ). I had a Mystery Box, but wasn't using it. After seeing your use of it, It's become a work horse for me. Your routining and reset of the box made all the difference for me!

Anyone owning the mystery box II, I'd be grateful if you could answer the question in This Thread (in Secret Sessions). (the existing responses do not appear to represent a definitive answer)

thanks, Doug

What is the difficulty level of this effect for a hobbyist who is not great at sleight of hand? thanks

Samdan, The Mystery Box will make the card to box trick much more convincing...but it will not do the trick for you. The sleight of hand involved is controlling the signed card to the top of the deck, a shuttle pass (A basic sleight) and the mercury card fold. The mecury cold fold (secretly folding the card in quarters quickly) will take some practice and is probably the toughest part of this routine, but is easily attainable with practice.
