I had a chance to see an advance screening and have to say "GO SEE THIS FILM".
This movie was an experience and worth a full price ticket. Go see it and I dare to say you will not be disappointed. BTW, Liam Nesson as Aslan, no one else could have done it better.

Is the new movie better than the original. I remember seeing the original when I was in elementry school after reading the lion, witch and the wardrobe as a class and I loved it.

If you are talking about the animated feature, YES IT IS BETTER. I remember that version as well and remember it foundly. This surpassed all my hopes.

I saw the film last night. Any thoughts from anyone else who has seen it?

I saw it, too. It was too "Disney'd" and dramatized. Also, the battle in the movie wasn't as "big" in the book. However, the effects were good, as was the scenery.

I enjoyed the movie immmensely. It literally brought the book to life right before my eyes. I personally rather wish they had started with "The Magician's Nephew" to see Narnia's creation...but, that little whine aside, I enjoyed the realism of the CGI and seeing Aslan brought to life.
This film will be added to my video libary when it hits the shelves. Skip

Dear Samuel,
I agree with you that Liam Neeson was an excellent choice for Aslan's voice. However after exiting the theater I spontaneously wondered if James Earl Jones would not have been a better choice. Just a thought... Regards, D |

I LOVED the BBC drama all those years ago.... have this quite idyllic memory of it, and remeber it being quite 'dark' (but then I was quite young!)
Not sure if it'll ruin my image, or if it has been made too 'Hollywoody'. Si |

I'm partial to the original order myself (starting with "The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe"). I like discovering Narnia with Peter, Susan, Edmund, and Lucy. And I like later getting the background on Narnia, Aslan, and the Professor from "The Magician's Nephew." I think if you start with "The Magician's Nephew" you know too much, and it spoils some of the drama of "Lion." Good and valid point, Geoff...which is why it's a LITTLE whine. :o) Although, The Hobbit DID come before Lord of the Rings, did it not?

Whoever said that the CG Effects were realistic must not have been watching the same movie as me.. I thought the digital animation was horrible. It was very distracting and stopped my enjoyment of the movie.. There is a standard that movies need to meet for minimum requirements regarding the quality of the Special Effects (especially big budget high profile ones like LW&W). It looked to me like they ran out of time and decided to open it regardless. With CG movies like LOTR and Jurassic Park - there is no excuse for the shoddy cartoony FX that this crap bucket had on display. Toy story and Polar Express were more realistic animation than this movie. One guys opinion...
The practical FX were good though (just not the Computer stuff). Go see it if nothing else is on - or better yet; wait for it to go to the second run dollar theatres.. |

On the whole I found this movie disappointing. It has been a long time since I read the books, and my wife never has, although she has read just about every other fantasy book in the world.
We both had a pretty hard time caring about these characters. One day they are playing hide-and-seek, suddenly they are royalty leading armies. They are never really tested to develop their characters. The one boy eats some enchanted Turkish delight and is bewitched. Suddenly he is a traitor, before he even figured out the rules. When he returns to the fold, Aslan tells the others to let bygones be bygones and the kids spend the rest of the film wandering around amid the special effects looking charming. I really don't mean to trash a work for which so many have a great affection, but it seems to me that if you weren't completely steeped in the books this film offers little. I found Tilda Swinton enchanting as always, but now I am thinking that she could have been so much more with some more to work with! There is a set of conventions that run throughout mythology, fairy tales, and fantasy novels. The rules are beautifully enumerated in Campbell's The Hero With a Thousand Faces. C. S. Lewis had a good grasp of them, and used them to good effect in his books. The committee that made this movie was thinking about something else. I agree that the costumes and effects work are not up to the recent standards set by the Lord of the Rings trilogy and many lesser effects films made in recent years. The film looks oddly "theatrical," as if we are seeing a stage production. My wife and I saw this film as a "must-see" film even though we had our reservations, and although we had some things to look at and talk about afterwards, it just didn't grab us. To those of you who really enjoyed the film, I am glad for you. It is with some trepidation that I learned that Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell has been acquired by New Line Cinema. I mention this so that fans of Chronicles of Narnia will know that it may eventually be my turn to be enchanted by a film that does nothing for many other people, or to be disappointed by a treatment of a book that I love very much. Yours, Paul |
