Since I already own the book, I don't plan to rebuy it anytime soon. However, if for some reason I lost the book (fire, angry llama, whatever) I would certainly replace it if it were available!
I think the idea of rebuying your rights and self-publishing or making an ebook is a solid idea. I also think a DVD would be great. Kevin

The Restaurant Workers Handbook is Gold. I learned so much from it!!
How about A DVD version? That way Jim could have a new project we'd all support! Chris

A good friend of mine GAVE me his copy of this book when I started showing an interest in lining up a restaurant gig. He said that it was the absolute best resource for him in getting him started in restaurant magic. When he gave it to me, he said, "Do EVERYTHING" this book says and you will be doing restaurant magic in 6 months. I followed all the guidelines and suggestions and the first restaurant I approached hired me on the spot. They kept me there doing magic for 4 years!!!
So Jim, please let me take this opportunity to say: THANK YOU!!! THANK YOU!!! THANK YOU!!! Your book made a huge difference in my magical career. |

Hey Jim,
Please do get your intellectual property back, and please do also see this as an opportunity to update per the DVD suggestions above, and if you'd like, to revisit these many years later anything about which you've changed your mind. Your Fan Among Many, ATPG

Thank you for the suggestions and kind remarks.
I really have been thinking about "Restaraunt Workers Handbook the DVD" for about a year now. It is nice to hear that some of you think that it is a good idea. I will story board and keep your thoughts in mind. I have sent your comments and emails...I can only wait for an answer. Jim http://www.jimpacemagic.com

Jim,
Stuart Beck here form the Corner Magic Shop on the coast in Seaside Oregon. As you know we have a well stocked book section and in the my private book library where visiting magicians are welcome to research...The Restuarant Workers Handbook is one that garnished perhaps the most interest! Many offers have been made, but that book helped put me through college and a master's degree! One of my most valuable and profitable textbooks. Regards, Stuart |

Hi Stuart,
Merry Christmas. Hope the season was good for you. If you guys are ever in Seaside Oregon go see Mr Becks place. It is a very nice well stocked shop. I hear that he will even have a Wizard fortune telling machine there soon. Jim

Jim, I have been away for the forums for a few weeks so let me first apologize for not commenting sooner.
Everyone here on the Café has listed yours along with another as the Resteraunt Magician's bible. I am still very green in the restaurant magic industry, yours was the first book I have picked up on this genre of our craft and have thus far found it invaluable. Aside from the reprinting of the book I believe you should purchase the rights back anyway if it's a financial possibility for you. I think a downloadable E-Book would be great as well as a DVD version with some real life footage. If it will help sway the publisher, I'll pick up a second copy:) I think the magic community would suffer greatly were this piece of work were to no longer be available. Please let us know how things progress.

Speaking of people that would be interesting in purchasing a copy of your book, I went and bought one today. Last one on the shelf. From the little bit I've read so far, the information is great. Thanks.

I heard some magician mentioned your book. Now, after all these comments I read, I'm sure I'll buy a copy as soon as it's reprinted.
A novice't reflection: I like watching my audience's jaws drop, but sadly in reality I'm just too busy to enjoy it.

Hi Jim,
The sales of magic books in general has suffered, as a result of the trend to purchase DVDs/instant downloads (this is what my local magic shop owner said). I prefer hard-copy books for their ability to break down moves, routines, etc. in a manner that can be easily referred to repeatedly. I prefer DVD videos solely for their ability to show what a routine looks like in it's entirety, and also to see difficult moves from different angles. These two media complement each other, and I would not want to sacrifice one for the other. I worry that if you publish in hard-copy only, you will miss a growing portion of the market. If you publish a DVD, you will miss out on the text-lovers. Here is a compromise: You could convert your publication to PDF and add embedded video files (dynamic e-book). People could print out the text, and could still refer to video portions on their computers. Dougla M. |

My first book made very little money. After my publisher said that he wasn't going to re-publish the book I asked if he minded if I self-publish. He had no problem giving me back the rights to a book that he had no intention of publishing again.
All I had to do was ask - but if you offer to BUY back the rights it's likely he's going to ask you for money. Just tell him that it's a vanity thing and you want to be able to keep publishing. |
