Hey guys. As a few people here know I am a proud Chicago police officer but today I am really ecstatic. The reason is this news clip. http://www.suntimes.com/output/news/pot09.html In case this link goes down a chicago police officer was arrested Friday the 9th of December for possession with intent to distribute 50 Lbs. of Marijuana. Why am I excited you ask? Because I worked the same shift with this guys and he was a complete scumbag! He would work at bars while off duty (against our General Orders) he had friends that were convicted felons (against our General orders) and he was known to beat his wife and use steroids (Yup you guessed it...against our General Orders AND Illegal) I had a run in with him when I arrested a bouncer at a club one night for a battery charge and this no neck steroid freak (who was on medical leave) comes up to me while I am in full uniform and in front of civilians and other officers and starts screaming at me to let the guy go and basically calls me out to fight. Just the kinda guy that should hold the public trust and uphold laws. Don't get me wrong, I love being a police officer and know that everyone and their mother has a horror story about getting pulled over and arrested or people just plain old hate the police, but after serving 5 years patrolling the Cabrini Green projects and getting shot at on a weekly basis I can tell you that it's not an easy job and despite the publics hatred for us I always put the publics well being before mine. Either way I just wanted to share how good it feels to see a bad cop go down big time. Thanks for reading

Its nice to know that a dirty cop gets busted once in a while. I wish that would happen here in missouri.

Hey,
I'm a former LEO as well! I know Skip who posts here on the Café is also a former officer. There seems to be a lot of us. We should form a club! LOL! Seems that magic and law enforcement attract similar personalities... Brookin6, I know the feeling brother. It's amazing how some jerks slip through the screening process isn't it? When a guy like that gets busted, it makes the rest of us who always try (tried) to be fair and honest look bad. The gen pop lumps all of us together with the line of thinking that one bad apple spoils the whole barrel. All part of being on the job I suppose... Lyndel |

He may not have been a jerk when he got in. It might have begun to develop as a response to the job. Not every one can take the pressures well.

Cops.
I have more respect for you guys than just about any other profession in our society. Talk about a tough job. Corruption is a major problem, especially in any position that "holds dominion." Putting one's head in the sand and hoping the problem will go away just won't work.

Oh, I thought this was about the SF cop scandal. I'd be interested to know what your opinion is on that brokin.

The greatest problem law enforcement officers across the nation face is one of image. Police Officers are seen as bullies, Parole Officers are seen as incompetent nitwits, Correctional Officers are seen as corrupt, etc. If you think otherwise, look at the characterizations throughout television. You will start to see a correlation. Law enforcement personnel are generally overworked, underpaid regular people. They react to situations just like you would, only the decisions they have to make can really be the difference between life or death. Everyone has to make a similar decision in their life, but law enforcement officers WILL have to make this sort of decision multiple times. I have had to do that three times for certain. The decision has to be made RIGHT THEN, you can analyze it to death (and it will be, I promise), but the fact is the decision is made based not on training that you get but rather on what you feel as a person. The bad apples get more press than the good. They spoil the image for the rest of us. It is good to see them get theirs, but I would rather see them get NO PRESS while they get what they deserve!!!

Jordini, are you refering to the goofy video's that the S.F.P.D officer made? They were difinitely in bad taste but he will probably be kept off the job more for using an official uniform for the video's and the press it recieved then for the video's themselves. I understand it was all in good fun and as someone stated before those of us who are the police or people who have police in their family will get the jokes but when it hits the press it is never good.

The press needs to have knot jerked in its "anything for a buck" tail. Lousy news ***s make a big national deal out of a private video designed to roast a retiring captain who was respected and appreciated by those who made the film. Where is our "Freedom of Expression"? Who's looking out for the right of these SFPD officers to enjoy a little in-house joke without everyone second guessing. Bad taste...maybe. Worthy of destroying a number of careers? Doubtful. Politics...it's why I put my badge behind glass and moved on.
My sense of humor is the only thing that pulled me through 22 years of intense police work. If the almighty media were to get ahold of half the practical jokes and black humor bantered around by us cops simply to maintain our sanity...we'd all look the greater buffoons. It's simple survival in a world where 1/3rd of the community wants to see you fired, disciplined, stripped of all authority or dead...and the other 2/3rds doesn't like you because you're constantly "harrassing" them for ignoring the rules and laws that keep them safe and society running semi-smoothly. Very few civilians can understand this. As for this Chicago cop who met his apparent fate. There are two sides to every story. He'll be judged by the laws he allegedly trampled over. So it should be...but, even he deserves to be considered innocent until declared guilty by a jury of his peers. Gloating causes more harm than it cures. Skip

It is amazing the sensationalism news it becomes when a Cop does something wrong. Any more TV shows make Cops, and Government agencies look corrupt. Why because all the special interest groups sue the industry for improperly protraying their race or culture. The Cops have don't that yet, sue the movie industry, like the other groups.
Here's a bit of news on the other side that you won't hear about and it's because the victim is a Cop and it doesn't sensationalize: Quote: Fraternal Order of Police, Lodge #5 (philadelphia)

Thanks for bringing that up, Dennis. Folks may have forgotten that Ben Cohen, back when he co-owned Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream, donated a large sum of money to Abu-Jamal's defense fund. To this day, even though Ben & Jerry's has changed hands, that brand never earns dollar one from me...or any other cop I know. It is not allowed in my house. My daughter made the mistake of bringing it home once. It decorated my front lawn...no anger...it just went for a short trip to remind my lovely daughter of that particular rule.
The same holds true for the other known donors to this defense fund...Ed Asner, Martin Sheen, and Susan Sarandon, writers Kurt Vonnegut, Alice Walker, and Barbara Kingsolver, and musicians Graham Nash, Bonnie Raitt, and Pete Seeger. Any product or sponsor of theirs will never see dollar from me and most other cops. These people see Abu-Jamal as some kind of wronged poet laureate who merely "defended himself against the police officer" by shooting him in the back then again as he lay helpless against his patrol car...in front of eye witnesses...including an African-American off-duty police officer. They've already succceeded in getting his sentence converted from death to Life without Parole. Now they want this murderer to walk our streets again...as an innocent man. Enough! Boycott these red-coated liberals and their products. Humankind, like any other species on this planet, has its killer beasts who taste blood and want more. Why is it so hard to understand that putting these monsters down...as you would a rabid or killer dog...just makes sense. Compassion? I'll save mine for the families who lost a father, mother, husband, wife, son or daughter who was doing his or her job protecting us from killers like Jamal. God rest their souls and d**n the beasts. Nuff said, Skip

Thinking about this SFPD police video. We watch Police Academy, Reno 911, Lethal Weapon and such and laugh at all of the stereotypical bits of humor...and yet, we sit quietly and watch as the news wh*res rake good cops over the coals for a private inhouse video meant as a roast? A roast that did little that the comedies mentioned don't do in spades. America...little wonder the world sees us as sheep.

Wow Skip, I hit a nerve!
I too, refuse to support, buy, or allow in my house, "Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream" The actors I either don't know or watch just like I refuse to go see any of "Hanoi Jane" movies, no matter what the rating is. Philadelphia is "across the street" from me, and I am a "Cop Family" so I do know your thinking here. Skip, Have you ever wondered, how that news video people just happened to be there to film some of these news story. It's almost like it was staged. "Hey, Mister, want to make $500 bucks? Just refuse to cooperate and stuggle with the police officers, we will film the whole thing. You'll be famous. Just one thing, it's our secret!" I wonder how many times that scenario has been played out? Dennis P.S. If anyone is interested in reading the victims side of the story see: http://www.danielfaulkner.com/

As a proud Chicago resident, I have to applaud the crackdown on guys like this. I've done a lot of work with local Chicago Police Department community projects and have gotten to know many police officers and detectives and I have to say that they are some of the best cops in the country. They're down to Earth, realistic people who I believe really take pride in their jobs. And a guy like this just puts such a black mark on the Chicago PD and deserves eveything he gets.
My city deserves better than this guy and it looks like it's getting its justice. Stay safe out there, Brokin6! |

Far be it for the media to be resposible for anything more than getting ratings these days. Having said that:
Perhaps the reason the public is suspicious of police actions is because of the good ol' boy mentality that is prevalent in the organization. When something happens the first thing cops do is cover each other's rear ends even when it is clear something wrong has transpired. What follows is typically a certain degree of cover-up as the good ol' boys cover for each other or turn the other way. Case in point, last I checked no one involved in the SF video scandal has registered outrage. The then Commander (when they filmed him) had a press conference to say the footage of him was two years old and was used without his knowledge and taken very much out of context. But did he say it was wrong to joke about racism and sexism? Not when I heard him, but then again that information was controlled by the media. I was prepared to say this was just an unfortunate, misplaced prank, but if we accept Sam's premise: Quote:
the fact is the decision is made based not on training that you get but rather on what you feel as a person. then we must admit that people who think it is lots if fun to joke about racism and sexism, even in private, will have some certain dergree of acceptance for same in their beliefs. Hence, their decisions will be made with some degree of racism and sexism as their foundation. Is that really a quality we want in our police officers? It may well be that this job is not one that can be undertaken without corrupting the minds of those who get shot at on a weekly basis. I certainly think the system is broken when I hear... Quote:
He would work at bars while off duty (against our General Orders) he had friends that were convicted felons (against our General orders) and he was known to beat his wife and use steroids (Yup you guessed it...against our General Orders AND Illegal) ...and the guy is/was still on the force. I also wonder when I read... Quote:
when I arrested a bouncer at a club one night for a battery charge and this no neck steroid freak (who was on medical leave) comes up to me while I am in full uniform and in front of civilians and other officers and starts screaming at me to let the guy go and basically calls me out to fight. ...why the person was not arrested or at the very least "detained" for obstruction of justice. A civillian would have been. This might be construed as a double standard. There are two sides to every story. Unfortunately police work may well have this in common with housework: No body notices when it is done, but they certainly notice when it is not done. My hat is off to anyone who undertakes this line of work. Not only is it a tough job but there is one heck of a public relations fiasco to deal with as well. |

For the first quote he had been reported a couple of times but it's hard to prove that someone is working somewhere when the transactions are in cash, about his friends he just plain old got lucky that no-one ever found out and for beating his wife, SHE has to be the complainant and trust me, she was too terrified to do anything. Also, being a jerk doesn't constitute "obstruction" charges. I was just giving an example of how he was a jerk.
