I was wondering what sort of success people have found with getting a custom set-up made. I am interested in making myself into a "human light bulb." I am pretty good with electronics and I have been thinking of either LEDs or fiber optics. However this would be a challenging task for me because (1) if I go with fiber optics my knowledge is very limited, (2) I need a lot of them to be turned on and off individually (or in groups) and I need to be able to do this under sufficient misdirection and finally (3) I’m one of the younger magicians on the Café, so even though I am good with electronics, I’m no expert. If I could get some ideas or names of some lighting/electronic specialists that you have found to be good and somewhat inexpensive that would be great.

Thanks,
Oman

You might also look into electroluminescent wire, or EL wire for short. This is a very thin wire that can be added to costumes and make patterns and designs with it. It gets used when people mod their cars, computers, for walkaround entertainment, etc etc. There are a ton of places on the web that describe it and offer parts and kits. Just put "EL wire" into Google and see.

I have used EL in projects...signs, costumes, ect. It is very flexible and runs on AA batteries with no heat. You can see a costume I made for 2004, which is ALOT more animated and bright than the pictures show you. I had a total of 684 volts making the EL wire, blinkies and LED lights light up. You can see the costume HERE

Thanks for the idea. At first when I researched the EL wire it looked perfect but now I realized that when I have it off it would still be seeable by the audience. I need something that the audience will only see when it is on. So, although EL wire is the easiest idea it does not work from the magic standpoint (which, after all is what we are all here for).

Thanks,
Oman

OK, So I've been looking all over the place for the right stuff but I have not found anything that meats up to my expectations. If anyone has any other ideas feel free to post them or pm me.

Thanks so much,

Oman,
I haven't done this kind of thing myself, but I would think the fiber optic light might be your best bet for this application. A few small bundles of fiber optic wires running to separate small light sources within your costume sound feasible.
