Should a Magician vanish 2 planes in memory of 9/11, being very careful to be tasteful in doing so, of course? What do you guys think?

I would say this really depends on your audience and where you live. Here in California, I would say that trick wouldn't fly (no pun intended) because people are still healing from 9/11 and we're currently facing possible retribution from Osama Bin Laden if our country goes to war with Iraq. I would even venture to say that people won't be "over" this enough to look at it historically until they feel it has been resolved in some way or other.
If you really want to do this, I would advise presenting it as if it affected you on a personal level. You could do this by talking about someone you knew who died in 9/11, this tact obviously depends on how you feel about lying to your audience or embellishing the truth in order to create the proper tone for the piece, (unless you knew someone in 9/11) and making the vanishing a sort of memorial. If you wanted to do a very solemn illusion, it might come over very well, just make sure you have a reverential tone about yourself during the entire preceding and give the audience a resolution or emotional release they might be seeking. If you don't feel good about lying, you could find a "friend" who knew someone in 9/11 and have them be present during the illusion as you explain that you are doing this for people like your friend who want their loved ones to be remembered. Explain how this helps or at least gives you another way to look at it.

I don't think there is yet a way that this could be done in good taste or without seriously upsetting some people.
It's good thinking -- but let it be, for now at least. |

Good points guys. Maybe, when the time comes, one of us here will do do it.
Peace guys.

The idea of performing in memory of 9/11 is good. The vanishing planes may not go down well, but how about a huge production of roses, a giant sympathy card that your audience could sign (you could take it on tour and then gift it to the city of NY on the 2 year anniversary, etc.)?
Just my thoughts, Chris.
The most beautiful experience we can have is the mysterious. It is the fundamental emotion which stands at the cradle of true art and true science. Whoever does not know it and can no longer wonder, no longer marvel, is as good as dead, and his eyes are

Hmm... Not bad Chris. Not bad at all.
At the end maybe produce hundreds of doves to signify "Peace"! Hope someone here runs with the idea... Good luck!

It's a good idea, but I think it would hurt some of the people who can't ever forget this terrible incident. But if you can perform it with the right way, it'll be a great show!
Good Idea Chris!!!

I would be very careful on sensitive issues like this. All you need is a member of the audience who lost family/friends on 9/11 and there could be nasty letters to the press. Anyway, that would be my take here in UK, maybe it's different your side of the pond. I quite like the idea of a large production of roses or doves.

Just be careful, it is basically either getting money or publicity from a horrendous disaster, people could take this the wrong way.

We all have our own way of dealing with tragedy, and 9/11 will forever fill our minds and the minds of those involved.
I work for a major airline and have for 12 years. I can tell you from a first hand perspective that airline personnel would not appreciate it, even meant in the spirit of healing. A year after, I still see agents weep openly about lost friends, hope, and even jobs. I don't think a vanish of an aircarft could be done in good taste, with feelings of remorse still in the air. So many people were affected by the event, both directly and indirectly, but many people seem to want to lean on the event to get personal gain. That is what I am personally tired of. The economy blames 9/11, a salesman blames 9/11 for his poor sales spell, survival gear companies ran ads showing fear to entice sales, it is all the same, and we need not stoop to that level. I applaud you for wanting to do something in the memory of 9/11, just carefully examine what you want to do, so as not to offend any audiance member and you will accomplish something great.

Uh, I don't like talking about this, but if you want to vanish planes, do 4. Two hit the Trade Center Towers, one crashed into the Pentagon, and one just...crashed.
If anyone sees my sanity, please return it to

A year after this tragic event, the nation is still trying to heal. Especially here on the east coast. I believe to perform an effect such as this would just open old wounds and prolong the agony that so many of us have had to deal with. Although this thread presents a thoughtful gesture, I don't believe there is a way that the effect could be presented without upsetting many people. Grief effects us in many ways and while some may see this as a tribute, many others would be reminded of the sorrow they have endured. Perhaps it would be better to remember the event in our hearts and minds rather than in an open display.

I hate to chime in here on this morbid subject, but you guys got me thinking. I think the proper illusion here would be to appear the Towers... bringing them back would kind of be like giving the bad guys the finger if even for a moment.

I have heard many magicians saying the appearance thing, We designed and built an illusion based off of the Flight 800 Crash. The prop was named the Larkin platform after an 11 year old girl who died in the crash. The illusion has no presentation or theme from the crash nor is mentioned, however, it's my tribute to the souls lost. I know it's a tribute, sometimes the audience does not HAVE to know it's reason.
I feel you can pay tribute to 9/11 and not be so obvious about it. Keep up the ideas, I feel it's totally possible and still be QUITE moving and VERY tasteful without feeling cheap, or like you are capatalizing on the tragedy....... Just my 2 cents |

I think that Chris' idea is the most suitable. Although I do not actually live in the U.S. my uncle worked in the trade center (luckily on one of the lower floors).
I think the idea of producing roses is beautiful and the best solution to a tribute. Personally, I would never perform any effect which is aimed towards this tragic event, I think it is best to leave it be. |

Vanishing planes "in memory" of 9/11?
Would you have performed the Bullet Catch for Jackie Kennedy? I think if any magician did something in memory of the event if would have to be impeccably tasteful, simple, and not over-bearing. vanishing planes, making towers or oversized novelty sympathy cards appear would be rather gauche. |

Ah.... I didn't think this thread would still be up after my long absence... but thank's for the thoughts guys!
