I've always liked the Jack Hughes' Last Card apparatus as made by Abbott's, Aldini, Worth and probably others. I keep seeing a version on one of the resale sites that has only three points to hold packets of cards and it comes with a separate houlette that is gimmicked. I believe the description says this piece is made of plastic.
Does anyone know any details about the origin of this effect and if the last set of two pieces is the older of the two designs? Thank-you |

Hi Julie,
Ron is so far off on this one! It is actually a Davenport Magic item called, "Star Selection" and it was not made by Jack Hughes. Actually, it was part of Davenport's "Demon Magic Series." In this version, the houlette does the switching for you. The "star" itself is not gimmicked other than made to spin. It is plastic and was made and sold in the late 1950's. If you can locate an old Davenport's catalogue (I have catalogs all over here for research,) you'll find it listed at 45 Pounds Sterling, which was pretty pricey for the day. But then, back then, plastic was considered a very "deluxe" material to use for the manufacture of magic apparatus. Hope that helps. |

Runawayjag, thank-you for the definitive answer!
I remember your forward thinking expressed in The Book of John or Verse Two relative to the handling of the cards enabling the discard stack to be shown all different. |

It's very gratifying to hear that people actually read what one writes and even moreso when they remember it. Thank you so much.

Gaetan Bloom released a new version of this principle that's pretty clever.

Julie,
The last one of these I had, I performed in a Ring 75 meeting (1980?) and promptly sold it in the Ring auction. It seems like I may have gotten it in some of Burling Hull's (Volta) old stuff when he went to the nursing home. It had the circle with four colors and clips for the packets. The base had the compartment for the necessary extra cards. For some reason I had always assumed it came from Abbott's. (Of course, I never knew for sure.) The running time on it was just too long for my show. So I found it a proud new owner. Knowing Bill Pitts at Ring 75 he probably still has a list of who bought what! (I hope we get him and some other collectors at SEAM 2006. Find us a crew of them! We need you there too.) Bob Sanders Magic By Sander |

Hello Bob
Personally I prefer the Worth version (Martin's?) where the color wheel sits on an easel and there is no secret compartment for loading extra cards in the base because there's no base! |

Is there some confusion between The Last Card color wheel effect and the Attaboy?

If Pete is talking about the new Bloom thing called "Wink," it works similar to Attaboy and not like The Final Card.

Bob The Worth "improved" version of "The Last Card", was, I believe, the brainchild of Eric (or Martin?) Lewis. I don't know how many were made, but it's clever. Since the stack doesn't come from the easel, but it does come from the apparatus, the only place left is the -----. If this is too vague, please PM me. |

Pete,
Note the topic: Everything old is new again Being feeble is appropriate. (See who all is here?) Of course, the real question is not Are we all here? it's Are we all there? Bob Sanders Magic By Sander (I wonder where I left my car?) |

I have just come into possession of an old Supreme apparatus made of metal with two houlettes. This one is called Supreme's "STOP-IT" and has the load for the force card(s) concealed in a place similar to "the Last Card".
