Hi It's me again.
I heard a lot of recommendation of Hopping Halves. I saw a clip of performing Hopping Halves. The effect is just that put aways coin and be back in hand. It looks not such impossibly wonderful. The sleight of hand can do it. I own the C/S coin and the "[" .That's all my gimmick. Using them, can do handreds of effect. I used to consider Hopping halve would be the next buying. It's costly for me. Now, I beg for your advice. |

When purchasing the Hopping Halves you actually get more than the gimmicks you mentioned owning, you also get what I think is called a sun and moon set of coins.
With this set of coins, numerous different routines can be made. For the price it's well worth it. johnny

I'd say no. You have a [ and a C/S coin? Save the money to buy either Roth,s book, Kauffman's book or Bobo's. It will give you much more worth for your money.

Also be sure to check out Curtis Kams Hopping half routine. From his "Danger Notions" notes. It's a great routine that doesn't use the standard HH gaff.

Remember that what you show an audience is just an effect, so if you can create an effect that is similar to, or better than, hopping halves using your current props, then do so. In any case it is your presentation that counts - people won't remember the exact routine or how many times the coins left your hands and reappeared - only that the coins kept switching places, so effectively any switching coins routine would be the same in a spectator's memory.
Personally I use hopping halves and love it, it gets a great reaction, but not any different to any other coin transposition routine I do. One thing I will suggest is to take care how you present it - one of the worst mistakes I ever made was to go down the 'If I take the silver coin, which one is left? No, you're not watching, I'll do it again...' road. Looking back, I cringe at just how patronising this was and (after reading Darwin Ortiz' book 'strong magic' - excellent) a different presentation made the effect into something I could regularly use and have the audience loving it. I've found Hopping Halves to be a nice versatile effect. As others have mentioned, there Sun/Moon coin that comes with it is versatile also. I have the Hopping Half in several denominations so that I can do a variety of effects using the same basic gaff, but that with different denominations, it's not as obvious. I'm sure those who think that coin magic should be limited mostly to non-gimmicked coins will tend to dissuade you from Hopping Halves, but I personally think it's a very useful gimmick with lots of possibilities.

Hopping halves is a great and versatile set of gaffs for other effects. You are correct in noting that the basic effect is rather weak and can be accomplished without the gaffs with only a little bit of sleight of hand.
The real value in a Hopping Halves set is that you get a nice variety of useful gaffs for less than the price of purchasing them individually. To create your own hopping halves set by purchasing individual gaffs you would need an expanded half dollar [, and english penny [, and a full sun moon set. Consequently, when you're starting out people recommend the hopping halves because the set costs about half of what all those gaffs would cost purchased individually. If you really want to do the routine with gaffs, then purchase the gaffs you would need to complete the set or, if it's cheaper, purchase a complete set and the extra stuff can be saved for a back up. If you already have a CS....There is a great hopping half routine on Mark Jenest's "Miracles While You Wait" VHS called "Short Hop". Uses some basic sleights and a CS. It is a great routine! and much easier to reset than a hopping halves set.

I am also looking into Hopping halves, any brand/quality in particular? a cheap set could do it?, in other forums, people is very vocal on the quality of the gimmick, which brings higher prices, while some others used cheaper version and are happy about it (I also read decoloration on the copper)
I'll appreciate your advise ... Thank you ... Pablo |

True rosfrog. To the audience -- a T&R effect is a T&R effect, a 3 Fly is a 3 Fly, etc. They don't know a Tarbell G*****k from a simple cut rope, a no-tear from Anderson's routine, a C/S from sleights. It is your presentation that counts. |

I like the coin gaffs made by Tango magic personally, they're about the best Euro coins I've come across, the rest are really cheaply made. On the other hand, things will be different in different countries, so if you let us know what country you're in you'll probably get some great advice. My vote for all countries using the Euro is definitely Tango magic. Pricey, but great (especially their folding coins with no groove around the outside).

The Hopping Half is one of the first items that I got when I first seriously got back into magic, about 15 years ago and it is one of the ones that I still use on a regular basis.
A good routine and these coins can go a long way. I also like Tavern Magic 2 (I think it is 2) that uses the Sun/Moon gimmick for some good effects. RevJohn |

I am originally from Argentina, but I currently live in Hudson Valley NY, so any brand/manufacturer/dealer I could use. Normally I buy through internet, no bricks and mortar around here

Everyone's made great points about the hopping half but since you mentioned that cost is an issue for you, Mark Jenest has a beautiful routine called "short hop" that uses only a C/S coin. Very economical, similar effect. Also, has the added bonus of being instantly re-set. Since you already own a C/S, your'e ready to do the effect!
As with the standard Hopping half effect, both coins keep hopping back to the left hand and in the final phase, shown empty. I do a variation where I load a jumbo 50 cent piece and a jumbo penny as I show the last coin being placed in the pocket. Then I still end up with a copper and silver coin, but they're jumbo. In my patter, I get the spec to admit there might be a copper and silver coin, so they're proven right.... and I get to surprise them with an amazing transformation. No one ever comments on the descrpency of the copper coin being a US penny instead of a english penny. If you can get a copy of Mark Jenest's VHS/DVD "Miracles While-u-wait" I think you will be impressed. I have the DVD but I think I may also have a spare VHS laying around... PM me if you're interested. I'd be glad to send it to you for free.
Mediocrity is greatly under rated!

Of all the coin magic I do, the 2 effects that have had the most impact and are remembered the most, even years later, are hopping halves and C/S/B. I use Johnson products for both. I do not use the standard presentation for the Hopping Halves but prefer to tell a story with the routine. Because there is a picture of a man on the half and a women on the copper coin, you can tell a story of lovers that have been separated and yet continue to find their way back together (similar to the patter Steve Bacho uses which is posted on the http://www.cs.wisc.edu discussion site). I have had people who I performed Hopping Halves for 10 years ago come up to me and ask if I would show them again the story about the 2 lovers that were separated. That tells me the trick made quite an impact and was not forgotten.

I agree with Paisa - Johnson Hopping Half is the way to go. I also agree that the gaffs you get can be used for other effects, so for me it was the cheapest way to get all the gaffs. How you use the gaffs is the important thing. It doesn't have to be the standard "Which coin is left in my hand" routine. If you get them, you can work with them to develop your own routines.

I got the Johnson Set of the Hopping Halves. It is great. I got mine from http://www.themagicwarehouse.com. Seach for it under the Johnson products. It is well made. I use it all the time. And the Expanded Half in the set is wonderful, I use it in tons of other routines that I perform. I recommend that set. -DP

I also use a Johnson Hopping Halves as well as Johnson C/S/B. I really like the idea of a dual jumbo coin production at the end instead of the vanish. I devised some original patter for Hopping Halves where I take one coin away and the other is supposed to vanish, but the trick "doesn't work." Of course, the surprise is that not only did the other coin not vanish, the first one is back. The ending didn't quite fit the storyline, because I am essentially sucessful on the last try. But to "fail" one last time where not only does the coin not vanish but both coins are now jumbo might be a great kicker for the end. I'll have to try it out.
For C/S/B, I'm learning Dan Watkin's CSB Assault from CoinVanish Volume 2. I hated the stock routine that came in the Johnson instructions. Dan's routine stays out of the pockets, has the magic happening in the spectator's hands, and doesn't require you to "confess" that additional coins are in play. A great routine, but I'm still working on one of the sleights needed to pull it off.
