Very interesting idea drwilson. We have such a store here. I'll check with them to see what they think.

How much does an ad in your local newspaper cost? Where I live it costs $62 for one day. I would also want to know how much an ad is in the U.S. if anyone can please inform me. Mikael |

Hi Rick,
Yes, I am that 'circuskevin'. Slightly surprised you thought it may be. I don't post very often. If you want any ideas for working with your 'kommune' let me know. Perhaps I should start a new thread? Kevin |

Just to be clear, are you asking about a display ad in a newspaper, or a classified ad? If you are asking about a classified ad, how many words for that price? Also, have you thought about what classification you might put it under? That might make a difference in response, as well as your choice of wording in your classified ad. I suggest classified ads over display ads, because generally they are less expensive, and I recall you are on a tight budget. - Donald P.S. I also tend to agree with the others who have stated that if it is very difficult convincing people (in your area) that the idea of hiring an entertainer for a birthday party is normal, than you might be better off using your energies to pursue other markets instead. They will be easier to sell, and should produce more returns for your efforts. (Again, this is all assuming you have a good show, and one that will meet their specific needs, and that you understand how to word your marketing so that your show meets the customer's needs.)

The rates for classified ads vary depending upon the distribution size of the newspaper (readership, exposure of the ad to more people), the day of the week (weekends cost more than weekdays), whether the newspaper comes out daily or once / twice per week, etc. Although I can't speak for larger cities, or cities in the U.S., $62 is more than we are charged locally for a single placement of a short ad. Do they give a discount if you pay for multiple dates, all at the same time? Perhaps some others will chime in. - Donald

I don't think making a new show, or adding new effects should be your next task. If you do put new things into your act, you are just doing busy work so you don't have to book shows. Why not book shows then think of a new act?

I will change outlook when I find something that works." Mikael, have you tried any of the ideas that we've all given you? Or do you just think, "I don't think that will work." Try something, you might be surprised. I am starting to think the problem isn't your country, it is you! You are the only one who decides if you want to succeed in this business. We can tell you everything we know, and after 2 pages of non-sense you've said no to almost everything, and I doubt that you've tried anything. Why not pick up the phone and call 10 people and see what happens? What's the worst that can happen? They say no? They probably will, but don't stop there, keep calling, everyday!! You can also call past clients who've enjoyed your work and ask for 3 references. That is a referral. You should be doing that after every show, asking for someone else's name and phone number who might be interested in your shows. You ask the party host that information and 10 times out of 10, they will give you at least one name and phone number. Then all you do is call that person and say, "So and so said I should give you a call and tell you a bit about my magic shows for your kid(s) birthday." It is simple, but you choose not to make the step forward. Take it step by step. And please, tell me what is wrong and why the above idea won't work. And I'll tell you that that single effort on my part and many others has booked me quite a few shows. Granted, that idea doesn't work in most corporate setting, but sometimes it will. Here's another idea, if you are that broke to not make a phone call, ride your bike to a past clients house and see when their child's birthday is and offer them a show. Try something! What have you tried??? |

For private birthdays I have tried putting up notes at message boards etc. It has worked, but not that good (it might be because before I didn't enclose the slips with my phone number, so if they were interested they had to find a pencil and a note themselves and write the number down. Now I have changed that, and they can take a slip). Word of mouth has also worked, but not that good. What has not worked at all is media coverage, it hasn't given me a single job.

Have you ever tried working behind a bar or picking up garbage or cleaning ash trays?
Because I think this is the direction you should go. Give us the link to your web site. |

I have spoken to Mikael on the phone and promised to post this:
For the last 5 years or maybe 6, I have had a quarter page in Yellow pages and to date only had 3 calls in that time. I get more hits from my website. Rick

I don't even advertise in the yellow pages.
The problem is you just don't want to do any work. You just are looking for a do something and sit on your butt waiting for the phone to ring and it doesn't work this way. I'd be happy to look at your Swedish web site and stop giving excuses because I am losing patience. [b]Oh my God!!! You are in software development. You really have no excuse for a poor web site- you understand computers better than most people. I'm sick of you and I will not help anymore or even look at your posts. You are a miserable sod who doesn't deserve help. |

Now that Rick has posted it should be obvious to everyone that things works differently here, and that not everything can be used regardless of where you live. Mikael |

The only reason people fail at using the yellow pages is because they don't know how to sell it properly. There are many books devoted to the subject in your public library that can be read. You could be right though. So why not do something else?
P.S. I would put some show photos in your web site, if you've ever done a show. |

Oh God, I had a look at the web site.
For starters get a decent photo- at the very least put up a curtain. Get an actual web address without the tool bar at the top. Actually I could go on for hours--- actually I could only go on for 1 page. You're not a professional, and you're nowhere near being one. I do not think we should help this person -if he starts to market well he will ruin business for those who know what they are doing. You suck man!!! |
