Already have. The problem (as I've said many times here) is that this effect's method goes counter to our own nature. If the "bad" cup is cup 3, we think 3, 3, 3... so we know what cup "to avoid." But as soon as our attention wanders, our subconscious does what it is trained to do and directs our hands right towards what we are thinking of, number 3. By our very nature, we go after what we think of, this method is counter to our natural reactions. So, if we loose focus, it is natural that we get impaled. Tony |

I really don't get the "point" of this trick. HA! Sorry, couldn't help myself.

Here is a clip where the performer is using a much thinner spike, like you'd use to stab receipts onto. And yeah, it goes straight through his hand. Why anyone would ever perform this, knowing full well their future in magic is at stake, is beyond me. |

I have a question... Does anyone have a copy of any of these clips of this effect gone wrong, aside from the YouTube posting? Thanks

Do you mean a higher-resolution video, or different clips altogether?
I have one hi-res AVI file of the clip from YouTube, but that's all I have. |

Yes, it is very dangerous and foolish and could cause serious injury. So when you do it to your friends, I'd suggest getting the 'No Chance' dice. Let's face it, you are street assassins, hall way hitmen. You don't let a lil' risk to your pals stop you. Of course, the fun lovin' among you will have a rubber hand with a spike through it and slap that down on a cup and see the reactions; good times.

I, myself, am interested to see what Mr. Mello has in store for us with "Instinct". Should be good, considering he is a co-creator for Bullet.

You could definitely do this with muscle reading.

I perform the 'Rusty Spike' version of this trick. The method is pretty much foolproof, and the reaction is priceless. However, I never declare beforehand that I will be doing it, so I have the option if I don't trust the audience. And I always have someone that I trust watching the volunteer while my back is turned so I can be warned of any foreign objects being inserted, etc. Call me paranoid, but my hand is worth too much for me not to take that precaution. As another out, I do have a fake arm that I can pull out and turn it into a comedy routine if I have any reason to suspect something wrong. But I have never had any problem discovering the spike instantly, and I love the reaction I get when performing it for adult audiences.

This effect sounds great, but I think I wouldn't do it. If you make a mistake, it's not quite the same thing as if your bunny takes a look out of the hat. LOL

As Danny Doyle, Bill Palmer, Danny Hustle, and many other well seasoned performers will tell you time and again, do enough shows and the screw up fairy will visit at the worst possible time. The more shows you do, the less calender time between visits. Anything that could maim you and stop you from performing in the future should be examined very closely. There are other danger routines that play big and don't have the same catastrophic consequences.
Just my two cents worth.

I said it before, and I will probably say it again.
On the bright side, when you do foul it up you can do all kinds of new and interesting coin moves. Few could duplicate them.

I fully agree with you, which is why I chose this one particular version over some others. Believe me when I say how simple the discovery is. And while the spike looks impressive, especially when I toss the last cup on it after exposing it (and it can be examined), it is not nearly as risky as a knife blade or thin nail. I even have the slam measured so that the hand looks great hitting but has a gap where the spike would be if wrong. (OK, so I'm taking the easy way out there, but it still looks good.) I've even done a couple practices with this spike and found the right speed to look good and still not injury myself in a screw-up. (Always practice recovery.) And I will NEVER use the spectator's hand! The key for me is the trusted observer (who has nothing to do with the discovery) and the comedy out (I always show the fake arm at first). If I ever am not 100% positive of the spike's location at the start, the comedy version goes immediately. I've tested it once with an audience (even though I knew where the spike was) to see the outcome, and it went almost as well. Believe me, I'm not a real risk taker, it's all a show. Can't comment on the other versions and would NEVER do the one with the knife blades. |

FYI - Viking has a kids friendly version of the trick using an egg instead of a nail/knife/spike etc. Much less risk all the way around and could be done for adults too.
Don't know their method yet and suspect that mine won't work the same. But am considering fashioning a gimmick to use with an egg for my version if I don't purchase theirs. |
