Hi guys. I am playing recently with the 3 shell game. The steals and loads are going well but I have a problem with a ball load. It is the one where spectator puts the nut over the pea and then puts a glass over the nut. I then move it forward to load it but as I do the nut turns around. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Does anyone have some advice for me to do this well? I got the idea while watching a show from Hans Kazan (a Dutch magician), he did it there and very well.
Thanks in advance |

Which make of shells are you using?

I'm not sure I understand. The spec puts the shell over the pea. Then the glass over the shell. The you move it foward to load it? I think you move it foward to steal the pea. Is that correct?
Then the next thing is the shell is turning around? I'm not sure what you mean there, BUT it may be a simple as using a smaller glass that dosen't allow the shell to turn around. Something that just fits over the shell. I may have missed the point of the question, if so, please forgive me. Keep on Truckin' dude. Vandy

Michiel, where did you learn to use a glass with the 3 shell game?

He said he got it from watching some Dutch magician. But it's a pretty common thing. Glenn Bishop does a fine routine with the shotglass. I've even see people sell the shotglass with the shells.

I have a similar problem, but I can't find a shotglass quite big enough to cover my shell. I really like the shells I have and don't want to get smaller ones. Does anyone know where I can find shotglasses with a little bit bigger mouth?

Try votive candle holders. They are a little bigger than a shot glass. I even found some that fit nicely over the La Maggiore shells.

Bed Bath and Beyond has the perfect glass covers for La Maggiore in the cooking section. I believe they are used to hold premeasured spices for cooking. Round and short. They should work nicely with your Vetnet's as well.

I had the same problem using a shot glass. I went to a restaurant supply store and purchased a small glass that works better.

Another problem I have with the 3 shell game is the scraping noise and feeling when you use them on a close up pad... any ideas on that folks?

You don't hear that noise with the better shells.
if it bothers you, it's probably time to get a good set of shells.

Phil Cass uses a small ceramic dish which he places over the shell. A very unique routine. You can order the routine in booklet form (Oh No, Not a Magician) or as a DVD from http://www.philcass.com

A couple of passes over a very fine (400 grit or better) sandpaper takes care of it. The La Maggiores have an almost glassy smoothness to the inside of theirs, so there shouldn't be any problem with them. The plastic ones("Perfect" shells or Vernet) you're pretty much on your own. Rather than a close up pad, I covered my table with poker cloth. It's a finer nap than typical close up pads. If you don't use your own table, you might experiment with making your own pad using this cloth. I've had absolutely no problem with this surface after I did the sandpaper trick to my S4S shells.

I never used the shells but would like to learn. Does Vernet sell the shell set including pea?

Yes, I believe the Vernets do come with the pea.

I second Phil Cass' routine as all the moves you'll need. Just don't use his playfully insulting humor unless your very brave. (Though I do like the story about taking drinks from bikies without even speaking.)
