I am interested in how many are MAC users on the Café'. I understand there are some interesting show control software and hardware items coming on the scene soon.
I have a video that aired of the Copperfield crew doing final show audio edits on a MAC a few years back. The purpose of this thread isn't about PC vs MAC debates at all please. I am simply interested who uses MACs on the Café' I use both a Dell PC Laptop and a MAC Powerbook as well as older desktops in both formats.

Hey, Glod!
I just KNEW you were a man of quality and good taste! I've been a Mac man since my introduction to computers, in about '90 or '91. Currently, I have a 20" G5 Tiger iMac, and I love it. Unfortunately, I don't do computer show control, though. Dan.

Dan, you are a lucky man. I want to get a 20" iMac myself, but I am currently typing on a 17 inch Aluminum PowerBook...which is incredible. I made the switch earlier in the year and haven't looked back. If I have to do 3d rendering, I unfortunately have to use a Windows machine. That only makes me appreciate my virus, adware, and spyware free computer all the more
I have been trying to research this very topic for my own knowledge recently, but haven't found anything of value. Sorry I can't be of any assistance. Nick Fox |

Mac and nothing else for me! Most of my friends who used to "dis" me for my Mac are NOW Mac users as well and all say...." I should have done this a long time ago"...my response.... " Told ya so."

I will stay with Mac also. My favorite response is "what virus".
I wish I had time to learn so much more. With my background in photography, it was natural to go to a Mac. They were so far ahead of the game for years. PC are catching up but most of the major graphic stuff is still done on Macs. Richard

Only the wise, intellegent and probably left handed use Macs. I dropped DOS 1 to get a first generation Mac before hardrives -- and my first scanner was a VHS camera on a tripod.
After oodles of models and systems I am still with Mac and recently added iMac G5 for musical integration in the act. GC

I've been a Mac user for years. (By the way, I did an informal poll at the I.B.M. Convention a few years ago and I think a high proportion of magicians use Mac vs. the general public.)
Anyway, I'm using a B&W with a G4 upgrade on Panther (10.3.9) and love it. Michael |

Count me among the proud and happy MAC users as well. 15 years now and never been happier! I do 3D rendering, CAD work, audio/music production and video editing for fun. I do graphic design and layout professionally. I do find my MAC a whole lot more stable and efficient than the DELL I use at work, which is a pretty good machine in and of itself, but I definitely prefer the MAC.
Show control is something that I would very much like to explore in the future. |

Forever Plaid, what do you use for 3d rendering and CAD work? How do you like it?

I'm a Mac user because they satisfy almost all my needs better than Windows or Linux. I do use PCs as well, whatever gets the job done best wins.
My belief is that the OS should be as transparent as possible, when I'm creating on a computer, and it's my humble servant, I don't want to have to switch right/left brain activities or have the OS get in my way. In my opinion, Macs win in this catagory. I use my PC almost exclusively for running SolidWorks, a CAD app that absolutely rocks. Nice thread! Jason

Nick-
I use Vectorworks for CAD and ArtLantis for rendering. I learned to use them in my former job when I was designing and fabricating trade show booths and displays. I find them both pretty intuitive to use, and certainly powerful enough for my purposes. |

My main programs - Logic Pro for composition, Adobe CS2 Suite for Posters, graphics, Back of Hall books use inDesign.
I am not compoletely happy with Appleworkd word processing, but I refuse to use any MS products I must willingly buy. Database in filemaker (routines, inventory, clients) and Aviner for writing manuscripts.

I've had a 15" Powerbook for about 2.5 years that I mostly use for light video work. I haven't had a lick of trouble in all that time.
I still use a Dell desktop as my primary machine, just because I grew up with Windows and the desktop has a larger hard drive, etc. Once both of my machines need replacing though, I'll probably get a Mac desktop. Kevin

I'm a Mac guy too, typing on my Powebook...with a new 80 gig hard drive, installed at a ridiculously low price by a great company here in Columbia SC area called Wegener media- http://www.wegenermedia.com/
Just in case you do need some repairs, check them out...they also have great deals on re-furbed machines... John

I, too, am a MAC guy all the way.
Have been for many many years. I have a 12" G3 iBook for on the road and a 20" iMac G5 for my home. Love them both. I also have a few older models around the house and a G4 for the living room, used primarily just to surf and google and post... I truly believe that once you go to MAC, You'll never look back. |

Just to be a nitpicker, it's Mac, not MAC. It's also Apple, and iPod (not IPOD, Ipod, IPod, or any other variation). There, got that out of my anal-retentive system.

Well however you spell it, isn't nice to know that the latest virus is not going to be attacking your Microsoft Windows operating system this weekend?

It's more than nice. It is a thing of true beauty. Before I got my Powerbook, I was on a 4 year old Windows box that had been infected with over 30 viruses in its time, and was brought back from the dead more than once, so the hassle-free bliss that is my Powerbook was and is greatly appreciated.
