Hi, do you guys have any references to comedy card routines? By that I mean routines where the emphasis is on comedy rather than the magic, while still having magic as a pretext. Thanks.

Don Allan's Great Put on would fit this category, as would Billy McCombs McCombical deck. Actually, tons of card tricks, probably at least half, can be done with a comic slant if that is the goal. The newer effect Kate and Edith is certainly a comic presentation of a Monte type effect.

Personally, I do a jumbo card rise with a comedy angle. In essence three cards rise correctly, but one is wrong. At that point it is insured...hence the Windsor Insurance Policy for a funny ending.

Terry Lunceford has a great marketed routine for Six Card Repeat. A whole new twist with so much comedy.

It has become my new opener in my stand-up act.

I do a funny card on back routine (with jumbo cards) for adults. Two times you secretly signal the audience as to what card the volunteer has selected. The second time the audience is signaled the card because it's on the volunteer's back. This is very funny to the audience cuz they're in on the trick and the guy onstage is clueless. It's called 'Back to Back'.

The list wouldn't be complete without Kerry Pollack's "Stan, Kate, and Edith"...

Take a look at most of the stuff from Steve Beam (Semi-Automatic Card Tricks Vol 1 - 4). Now there is a funny guy. He was over here in the UK a couple of months back and was simply great.

Dan Harlan has a funny routine called 'Hold it, Buster!' It's on his all purpose show video, and I think it's also a marketed effect available at magic shops. It's got a very funny patter/storyline that keeps it entertaining.

Color Blind is an entertaining trick but is only as good as the presentation. The props are simple and if your patter is comical, you have a good comedy trick. It is definitely not a "Card Trick" as requested on this thread.

Seth,
You might want to check out Comedy Card Revisited in my Showtime column in the Linking Ring magazine of April, 1998.
It's a stage or club routine in which the spectator and magician spell the name of cards, using a jumbo card packet; the spectator is always right and the magician is always wrong (or vice versa, depending on how nasty you want to be! <G>)

jkvand, He does have it out for market. He also has a packet of jumbo cards out with the same rountine called "Hold it Buddy."

Comedy Card in Balloon is another funny one. It's a parlour/stage trick. The picked card is suppposed to appear in the red balloon, but it blows away. The card is supposed to appear in the blue balloon, but it loses air. The middle balloon pops, and the card is there.

I assume that you are looking for effects that are both inherently and intentionally funny. In other words, situational rather than verbal comedy. Funny patter (how I hate that word) can be applied to anything but some effects can be very funny without pasted-on jokes.

I sometimes start my card routine with:

"Pick a card, any card...(they choose)..except that one please..."
(-I can't have this card?)..."just kidding, go on and take that if you want." Smile

I think that a lot of card routines could be made into a comedy routine. I know that the invisible deck/brainwave is really good for that.

I never do a stage show without the Don Alan's Insurance Policy! Check this inexpensive effect out. It's fantastic and a real applause grabber.

Don't forget Oscar. It plays well and you can repeat it in a walk around or trade show situation because no card is forced. The card keeps changing.

Hank Moorehouse has a new good one too. I think it is called Kids' Cards.

Great trick. As a matter of fact most of P.H. Stuff has a comedic slant to it. You may want to get his books.
