I've only seen it performed live once. Not bad....
Imo, would catch most by surprise as the prop looks identical to the normal Zig-Zag. I have the plans from Illusionworks. The method looks impossible even from the drawings. Anyone experienced with it? Thanks. Peace.

Hiya David,
The Zig-Zag Outdone Illusion is basically identical in performance to the "normal" Zig-Zag but(and this is a big "but")the middle box is pulled out completely off the prop and is put on another table (the assistant's hands still on it)! Hence, the "Outdone"... Caught me by surprise the one time I saw it performed. Imo, one of the best illusions around as it makes a complete mockery of Fox's exposure! The best thing about it is that everyone watching (Magicians included imo)would think that it's just gonna be the "normal" Zig Zag (nothing wrong if it were though...) but when the middle box is pulled completely off the prop, that's when you understand the meaning of "strong applause" my friend! An illusion within an illusion, you could say! Great piece of conjuring and workmanship! That's why I was wondering if anyone here has any experience with it... Phew.... Thanks for asking David...

Now that is an illusion that I would like to see performed! If it plays as well as you have described it, then it is one killer of a trick!

The first, and hopefully not last, time I saw it performed was 2 years back. Don't remember who the Magician was but he even had the Z-Table from Illusionworks to accompany the illusion. Must've built both props following Illusionworks' plans I guess...
Yup, Harry, it's a killer effect! Leaves 'em fried like such....

Hello Pakar, I may have misunderstood your post about the plans being not very clear but as I have a fair amount of experience with fabrication plans If you would like any help just ask.
Regards, David

Thanks so much David. I wasn't planning on building it just yet but I will contact you as soon as I am in need of any fabrication plans.
Sincerely, thanks. You've just proven again that this forum is about Magicians helping Magicians with your unsolicited offer of help. Thanks....

Pakar,
I worked with Rand Woodbury on Carnival Cruise Lines for a while. My understanding is that Rand did it a couple of times but found it to be too much trouble to do on a regular basis. It's pretty hard on the assistant in the Z table. Personally, I think magicians are making too big a deal about the exposure of Zig-Zag on Fox. I have always featured Zig-Zag and it always gets a great response. I even performed it 3 nights after the Fox special exposed it. About the only comment I got was "I saw how that was done on TV and I still can't figure it out!" We magicians are bored with Zig-Zag because it's so commonly used. Experienced entertainment buyers (agents, cruise line entertainment directors, etc.) also see it "too much." The truth is the public doesn't see magicians that often and few illusions are as effective and practical as Zig-Zag. (One magician, one assistant, vs. multiple assistants.) I think the general audience remains amazed at Zig-Zag, while Zig-Zag Outdone amazes magicians more! Michael |

MM: You are right on the money. I saw Harry Blackstone, JR. do the Zig-zag at the old Burt Reynold's theater in Jupiter, Fl. He did over 15 minutes with it and I was dying with boredom. Intermission came and that is all the people in the lobby talked about, with unbeliveable enthusiasm. My wife elbowed me in the side and reminded me of the need to entertain people not magicians.

That reminds me of what made me decide to get a Zig-Zag. Before I started performing illusions, I was convinced that I only wanted to do "original illusions, not the same old stuff."
I was in Nashville, TN to see Andrew Kole perform. He opened the show with Zig-Zag, then went on to perform many original illusions: he walked on water, walked through a person, and several others I had never seen before. After the show, some of the audience members overheard a fellow magician and I talking. After confirming that we were magicians, the only illusion they asked about was the Zig-Zag Andre opened the show with. That convinced me to rethink my logic. Here they had seen one of the great creators in magic do all these original illusions and the one that stuck in their mind was the one and only Zig-Zag. I made up my mind to get one when I began performing illusions. I've never regretted it! Michael |

I have to say that we enjoy performing the Zig Zag! I read one post that said it all, people don't see Magic Shows everyday and most have never seen the Zig Zag, we get compliments on it whenever we do it and for kids it never fails to leave them baffled and talking long after the show!

Rand Woodbury is Illusionsworks. Volume 2 of his Illusionsworks books went back into print, looks like sans some of the illusions from the first printing.
And you need THREE assistants for Zig-Zag Outdone. it's in Illusionworks book 1. |
