You are performing in the bar for a group of people. The bar is quite empty, and they only stayed for one drink to watch the magician. How can you make them stay for one more drink?
How about people who have been there all night? Can you really make them have one more drink (and show the management you did?) Does the presence of a magician make any difference at all for those groups? |

Get them involved as much as possible . use tricks that happen in their hands. they will seem cool in front of their friends. then their friends will want to try it too.
I use some tricks that involve guessing what card is which. like 2 and 3 card monte. you cand also use cups and balls. make it seem like a contest. but not between you and them. between themselves . let them argue and stuff. they will have fun. -Matt

"Everybody up front has to have a drink in front of them before the show can continue." That works.
For the guy who has been nursing one drink all night long, grab a bunch of straws and shove them into his drink - "Here - this might help. I've heard of nursing a drink, but I think you're trying to bring that one back to life!" Done in a light-hearted manner, not sarcastically, it plays well. Heba Haba and the guys at the New York Lounge used to use it all the time - often on me! Just two for you. Lee Darrow, C.H.

Actually, a group of about 10 guys sat down for one drink to see me perform, instead of leaving immediately (it was early and the place wasn't crowded to their liking yet). At about 4 EUR per drink that makes an extra turnover of 40 for the bar. However, they left almost immediately after my performance.
Though they came checking for girls and it probably wasn't my fault, I would have liked to keep them for one more drink anyway. Any suggestions? |

Here is the suggestiona and you hit on it.
Fill your barstools with women. the men buying drinks will follow and both you and management will be quite happy. Have more material. If you only have a few tricks it won't be easy to keep people staying. I suggest reading The Magic of Matt Schulien and Magician Nightly the Magic of Eddie Fechter. These guys ran magic bars and restaurants for generations. They have many many bits and tips to keep them turning glasses upside down a LOT.

In the bar magic video by stevens magic both bob sheets and scotty york mention that the women get the seats and the guys stand up becasue women wont stnad around all night but men will do anything if there are women around.

If I recall correctly, I believe it was on the Stevens video on bar magic, one of the performs (I think it was Eric Mead) basically will not perform for people who are not drinking. If they only have 1 drink and want to sit and watch magic, they won't be performed for.

A good trick which will focus the spectator to look back at his/her drink is the "Card Under Drink."

WOW what a great topic, I recall of my 10 years bartending that it was my job to sell drinks then do magic....LOL But there are many many ways to get them to stay have more drinks but the best way for me was always produce a shot then drink it(of course it was tea...LOL) then I would make a comment about do you want to some more magic well the magic gets better the more you drink...Of course that's a old line but it works.

Every question here is answered at Magic In The Rockies every year. Doc Eason, Eric Mead, Bob Sheets, and at least one guest behind the bar run an evening of bar magic behind the Falls Bar at the hotel. Yes, the women got the seats at the bar. Between magicians Doc was canvasing the crowd from behind the bar for drink orders. By the time the next guy was ready to perform everyone had a fresh drink and was ready to be entertained.
It is truly fascinating to watch. Chris |

If I may add one word of caution, while selling the drinks it is very important to remember that a lot of times one more drink can push a normally mild mannered guy over the edge to becoming your worst nightmare.
I think that your thoughts are valid in wanting to prove your worth to the management, just make sure that while attempting to do so that you are cognizant of the risks associated with “just one more drink”. I have learned this the hard way in the past and really had it bite me in the butt. I worked behind the bar doing magic at a cigar bar, and a regular came in for a quick smoke and a drink, he enjoyed the magic so much that he stayed and had several quick drinks and ended up going from a fun loving business man enjoying himself to a defendant in a destruction of private property case after spending the night in jail because he decided to burn the bar repeatedly with his cigar. Luckily I had already packed up and headed out prior to all of that happening. Good luck but be safe.

I grew up in a bar. Party of four together in an otherwise dead room?
One of those guys is going to "win" a tap beer from me somehow, leaving the three guys with empty glasses. Subtle hints: "I gotta admire a man who travels with three designated drivers. Very conscientious of you..." (Gesture at the otherwise empty tumbler of ice in front of them)"We have bottled water. You don't have to melt your own..." "I've got time for maybe two or three more before the bachelorette party gets here..." Not all magicians are good bartenders. But all good bartenders are magicians. Regards, -jjg |

A good poker player draws other players into a pot...
Take real 3 card monte... show them a basic move - then move away to someone else - if they don't follow or watch intensely it probably doesn't matter what you do...
catch you later

Keep in mind with new laws, we're responsible for how much they drink if there's a problem when the leave.

Chris in America you have had that responsability for a LONG time now.
It is not about getting them smashed, it is about selling as much as possible. It is a fine line. Drunks historically are not great to work for anyway so you can be cutting your own throat. BUT if your tending bar they tip pretty well generally. Go figure.

Back when I was tending bar if I noticed somebody might be getting a little too hammered or drinking rapidly I would try and get them to buy some food, nachos, wings, etc.
This would do two things ,1. get something in their system to slow down/help metabolize the effect of the booze and 2. just get them to slow down drinking. In my part of the US we had a couple of bars get sued in the mid 80's for people getting into life changing/fatal car wrecks on the way home from the pub. So, shutting people off and or slowing them down was standard procedure. If that failed we would try and get them to take a cab (at our cost if it was refused because of a lack of money). If you are nice about it and a bit clever you can make it their idea. As a last resort we would call the cops if the guy insisted on driving and was smashed. That happened only once in my time working. Granted these were small pub type places. I don't know how the guys in the high volume gin mills kept ahead of the curve. I agree with Danny that it is a fine line. Best, Dan- "MT is one of the reasons we started this board!
