Hey I'm 14 and I work at a restaurant and I have a believe I do magic that is perfessional. I also accept tips gratefully. But I don't get much money. I know that often times its because of the venue.(which I work in a bbq joint) But even if someone was working at mcdonalds I believe they could make more in tips then me. I havent made anything over 30 bucks. Is this normal if not what can I do to help myself. Is it because I'm young and people think that my magic automatically is unperfessional because I am young. Thanks in advance for the help.

My tips arrive automatically when I do my last effect; I use many psicology in that and I perform a money trick. Pm me if you want to know my lines...

I think the more you worry about tips, the less they will come. Tips are the last of my worries. However I'll give you some advice that I've picked up from others over the years. First, it is important that when you go to perform your last effect, the people know it's your last effect. If they wanted to tip and didn't know you'd be leaving then, they might not have had a chance to get the money out before you left. At pretty much every table I give something away, it could be a card frog or sometimes a deck of cards after performing a color changing deck routine. Something that people will cherish. I also took the liberty of making a cardiographic with a close up pad, I have several of them, its a great give away, and almost certain to get a tip from that give away.
Some people just aren't tippers, while others tip left and right. I try not to worry about these things. Tips for me are a little bonus which usually gets spent at the magic shop. |

No matter what lines you use if your in the wrong venue you will leave basically tipless period.
Doing a money trick in no way means you will be tipped. I do O money tricks and do as well as anyone on tips simply because of my environment. Examine when you are working. For example before or after dinner>? Before will be far less tips plain and simple. Work after if you can , when they are ready or already have the check and are THINKING of tipping in the first place. Do you have a good enough relationship with the servers so they are helping? all this adds up to major differences in tips. but the bottom line is still "where are you working"?

I don't think age is ever a problem, I as sixteen/seventeen when I started doing the restaurant circuit for a bit and I got tipped well...it's all about presentation, I like it was mentioned before used psychology things to get them thinking about tips. Money tricks are a good start.

Yah I definentily agree with that
I also thought that going and performing whn they get the check was a good I dea too. But if if really worried about not making enough get other venues besides the one you arre working at now. Thanks Sean

Want a GREAT "TIP"... stop thinking about 'yourself' and the gratuities you can garner, and concentrate on entertaining the guests and your value to the venue...Tips will be there if you have earned them.Best.

Here is another "TIP".Entertaining, especially in Restaurants is much more then performing magic tricks. You have to engage the guests on a level that allows them to think:"hey I really like this guy"(or gal). How is this accomplished?...By conversing with them.People love to talk about themselves, and their kid's etc.You will greatly increase the possibilty of a gratuity if you make THEM feel important.

A way to increase your tips is try wearing a pouch reading "Thank You" somewhere near waist level. Put a few dollars in it up front. The patrons will understand what it is for. There can be disadvantages too.

Hi Dynamike:I don't know how serious you were, but wearing a Thank-You pouch with a few bucks up front is almost as tacky as wearing a button that say's "Tipping is not a city in China". Best.

Dynamike PLEASE tell me your kidding.
aside from looking like an exotic dancer with bills hanging out it is STILL a horrible idea to actually do. Although it is a fantastic joke if your kidding. Rich your right engaging the people is the most important. I assumed this was already done though. You can actually be better "tipped" when you are more engaging and LESS magical! Do not overlook this point. age can certianly be a problem because you can run into the "nice kid" thing and that is bad for tips. Although Rich I hve to disagree with you on one subtle point. At some point you HAVE to consider the rewards of what it is you are doing. If you don't your business will surley suffer for it and this is always bad. While your working it is a bad thing to "center" on , but after work and asking questions and evaluating the business it is a necessary evil.

Tip varies... some nights, you can be on the ball and entertain the socks out of everyone -- and you won't get A DOLLAR of tip (happened to me once before..)
sometimes, you can be off your standard and gets more money in tips than the resturant gig altogether. Make them laugh... people come to a resturant to have a GOOD TIME. they don't care if you baffle the crap out of them. If you can make them laugh and have a hell of a time, chances are, you'll get more tips. of course, your venue is important. If you do family type resturants, you won't get as much tips as those who work in a resort hotel.

First off, let me tell you that I am not doing resturaunts at this moment, but I will be soon, and I have been doing my research.
1: You should not be working off tips, you should get the managment to pay you, according to how long you work, for how many people, and how good you are. 2: Burger King??? I would DEFINATLEY suggest you get into a nicer resturaunt! You can keep that if you want (I don't know how you would enjoy a burger king, but that's me) but you should also go into some nicer, higher end resturaunts. The managment will probably pay more, and you will probably get more tips. Fast food places are places where people go to eat quickly, and leave. If you go to a high end resturaunt, people wont mind being entertained, because they have the time. And they spent lots of money. So, just my 2 cents. Good luck! |

Shane, I understand. I'm on your side. I see no problem giving a young man like you a tip. I see nothing wrong with a person your age having a pouch reading "Thank You." I would be glad to tip some kid selling lemonade or Girl Scout Cookies. I may have PM you more advice because someone above won't like me giving you my "Tips."

Yeah but I also don't want to be tipped because I'm a cute kid either. I wanna be tipped because I'm a good performer and they had fun. Also if its ok for me to do it then why isn't it ok for adults to where tip pouches? I want to be treated as an adult not some young kid which often I am. Thanks for the advice.

Sjballa147,
Yes it is because of your age and all that goes with it. When you are older you will have more skill, presentational ability, life experience to draw from, confidence to demand what you need to pay your increased overhead, etc. Kirk |

Dynamike:Most of your posts are right on,but advising a young performer that wearing a tip pouch may help,is downright irresponsible.IMO.
