The cups and balls I think is one of the best tricks going simply because of its versitility. There are also many different performances of this routine whether it be three cups or two. I have come up with a couple of routines and they both work extrodinarilly will with spectators and magicians alike. This trick is deffinitly worth learning.

Stormchaser,
The responses aren't mixed in reverence to the trick. Just levels of sarcasm. My kids show is given like a class on real magic. I go through magic words, using a wand, solids through solids, etc. I conclude with Cs&Bs because it is a combination of everything I demonstrate prior. I've closed with it for 4 years, and have never reconsidered. It's a great trick, and after thousands of years, people are still coming up with original presentations. Close up, Stage, Routined, Just Jamming, always super cool. Sorry for the sarcasm. To me your question was as silly as asking if cards were worh it. And Payne's answer got me in the mood But I realize we all have different exposure to magic and the world. My bad. Even if Cs&Bs aren't your thing, there is so much to learn from it. Mr. Muggle: I prefer to keep my Chop Cup gimmick in my Chop Cup, thank you.

It wouldn't hurt to pick up the Ammar DVD's as it shows Vernon's routine and most of Ammar's routine is explained.

If you are just getting started in magic and wanted to “try” out the cups and balls I would recommend that you NOT buy Ammar’s book and tapes but rather go to Barnes and Nobles or Amazon and buy Mark Wilson’s “Complete Course in Magic”. I will cost you about $20.00 USD plus a little postage.
From it you will get a good, basic, and entertaining Cups and Balls routine, plus more magic than you will use in a lifetime. You will simply get more bang for your buck with that investment. That book plus an inexpensive Morrissey set of copper cups (get them used here at the Café) and you are set and you will have less than $50.00 invested.

I would have to say the Cups and Balls are an excellent effect for any magician of any level. You can get started with a cheap book (Mark Wilson's, cheap does not here mean little value) paper cups and cotton balls and no experience (I did). Then with a little practice perform. You can take that same effect and mature it until you have a more advanced effect with expensive cups and all the books and videos you could want. I am not in a position to say that you MUST be competent at it, but I feel it is well worth the effort.
I think the nice thing about Cups and Balls is in it not needing gimmicks. But I guess if you want to "Chop" it go on ahead.
Magic is doing improbable things with odd items that, under normal circumstances, would be unnessecary and quite often undesirable.

Stormchaser,
I agree with Harry Murphy's post about Mark Wilson's book, the routine is a great starting place, then move on to Ammar. For a little less money (if that is a factor) you can get Mark Wilson's Cyclopedia of Magic. It's the same material except for tricks with items you would have to buy from the magic shop. So the full cups and balls routine is in there. You'll understand Ammar a little quicker after learning the Wilson routine, too. Have fun! |

I remember seeing a video of Shawn Farquhar's C&Bs, but I can't remember where. Anyone know?
