Another vote here for Okito Reverse-sembly.

I also think that it would be worth looking into Okito box work by Woody Landers. He has devised some extremely effective, visual magic with the prop.

Woody has some of his material published in Apocolypse and in his lecture notes "Woodys Goodies" or "The 24 Hour Happy-Hour Magician"

We can't forget Woody, can we Eric! If it were not for Woody, I wouldn't own or ever have made an Okito Box. Woody's the walking encyclopedia of Okito Box magic. I've owned http://www.okitobox.com for a long time now and never done anything with it. Perhaps we can persuade all the greats to contribute some of their knowledge about it all and we'll put it up on the site? Sure beats having it sit there doing nothing.

Any takers?

What happen with the Ken Brooke routine? I think the effects are clear and easy to understand. I wish I can find someone who has seen the routine by Ken themself performed.

I have not seen many but I do like chad long's routine.
I also like his box. Don't know what kind it is but it looks
old and cool looking.

what do people think of the budah box?
I like the shape. Do the function properly?

one last question... is there a "false bottom" option to
any of these boxes... kind of like a "coin cup"?

is there any benefit to an okito box over a boston box?

thanks,
frank

Yes, there are false bottom type boxes. I won't discuss them in detail because it'll expose them, and some of them are some of the best kept secrets in coin magic to this day.

Sure, there is a huge benefit to the Okito over the Boston. You can hand out the Okito, you can't the Boston (unless it's part of your routine).

In many cases, not all, by any stretch, but in many, the Boston is switched in and back out during the routine.

I personally have never cared for the Buddah boxes. Some people like them, I don't. I don't like the way they handle. That's why I designed my own boxes and made them for friends and some of the top coin guys. Until you handle the boxes (any boxes), it's hard to say what you like. My box feels right for me (and others who have it), but it may not feel right for you. Okito's can be quite personal. I know people who have used the Dragon box and loved it. I pick that box up and my skin crawls.

There is a very healthy Okito Box world living in the underground and you'll not get people to talk about it or offer up any material for publication. Perhaps that's why I love the things so much. It's always been my favorite item in magic. I wish my skill with them matched my love for them, but that's another story.

I agree with MagicPitch. Once you start to work with them you'll soon find your favorites. I'd start with the Johnson boxes since these are readily available and relatively inexpensive. The Budda boxes are nice looking, but I found them a bit cumbersome in handling. The Jim Z boxes are great and well made, handle nicely. I have a set of Roth boxes, too, which I think perform better for a number of his moves. The Chad Long routine is a very commercial routine which lay people really react strongly to. The strongest ending, in my experience, is the Box Through Hand effect, that Roth teaches on his DVD. I just don't like all the coin through hand sequences that precede it. Another nice ending is boxing the coins, removing the lid and showing the coins have turned into something else (like rice, in my experience). A method was published in Genii, of all places, but a much easier (and less mechanical) method was easy to devise (ye olde "box switch").

If nothing else they are a classy way to store and bring out your coins and a boston or slot can be used to secretly load an extra coin...
catch you later

Roy Kueppers also makes beautiful boxes from brass and a jeweled finish aluminium.
All gaffed boxes are also made to match.
