Here is an opinion sure to stir things up.
Criss Angle along with David Blaine have destroyed all the work done by the pioneering magicians on TV. Too much video fake, not enough magic.... Also for any of you that remember there was a masked magician in a TV show after the Valentino disaster. This guy had some very distinct looking lips, sure looked like Criss Angle to me, any one else think so?

Who else was impressed with the Graphics in Jurassic Park? I was - so it looks like that might be the future of magic on TV... creating the unbelieveable.

Gee, imagine a magician lying about an effect. I am shocked. Most laymen would never catch any of this stuff. We catch it because our minds work differently when we watch a trick. Like we know when the dove is pulled. Laymen don't.

I'm just curious. Why is any of what David or Chris's do bother you? How does it really effect you? I mean for those on here that are paid performers. Does this really effect your business? Do they say to you I will only hire you if you can do what that guys does on T.V.? If so I think you need to sit back and reevaluate what you are doing? You are a Great Performer and should never be compared or allow yourself to give anyone a reason to compare you to any other magician.
These guys are making moves with magic. So what they edit. OK I know it is not the greatest thing. Oh well move on. Why keep watching them? All that does is add to there ratings. Oh don't say that you don't watch them. Because you do. If you don't watch them then fine your argument is to say I don't like his style and that's about it. If you are not watching them then you don't know what they are doing to complain. Its just funny I think how a lot of people hate these men. But they choose to watch them, or if they release something all the hype gets built up about them. They are doing there thing let them live. if you don't approve of what they do then fine change the channel. If I'm doing something that would resemble something that one of them do and I hear" oh David Blaine DID that" I say "Yeah Guess who thought them" or "oh no one is a good as Chriss Angel." With a sarcastic remark. We have a few movies that are coming out soon specifically about magicians. And you know what, you can bet your bottom dollar that they will use Hollywood Magic to make these films. Are we not going to watch these films? I doubt it. There are the few who wont but most of us will. Are we going to have a Why did the Director Edit that thread and so on? These guys are just performers that are using what they can to enhance an effect. That's All. IMHO not saying I agree but hey I still like to watch both of them.

Paisa23, I'm not sure if your post if for Magic Sam, or myself. Let me answer from my point of view.
I have been in magic over 30 years. Over the years I have watched various magicians bring their entertainment to the small screen. All of the performers worked very hard to establish that the magic seen on the screen was exactly as it was in the studio. They wanted to distance themselves from "movie magic". This was basically the formula that worked, and made magic available to many more people. I did not say David, or Criss were not good performers only that they destroyed the work others before them had done to establish magic on TV. In respect to the possiblilty of them affecting me personally, its always a hard concept to sell but it does happen. I have received comments not only from may magic pals, but from people I meet in everyday life. During a conversation a person said they had lost interest in watching magic on TV after seeting David Blaine because "all of his stuff was just camera effects", and "if I wanted to see that I would have gone to the movies". If magic loses credibility on TV the networks will not create the shows, and we could loose may more entrants into our hobby due to the loss of exposure. Just something to think about.

Magic Sam: I never would have ever caught that. Good eye man. I don't care for his presentation that much, but the effect is amazing. I wonder if it really could be replicated with such great angles. I'd easily be prepared to spend $1,000+ if I could do that to my girlfriend while surrounded.

Ok the point of Jurassic Park. Let me just say that I went to see a movie and I did indeed enjoy it. Had I gone to find a meal the popcorn would have sadly disappointed me.
He is putting hismself forth as a magician, not a special effects technition. If I want that I would look for a demonstration by George Lucas's people. I for one feel laymen see what happens. Heck they tell me all the time what they catch other guys doing. I am not going to be so arrogant as to say "laymen will never catch this". Good luck with that one guys. For example just because they don't know what a double lift is does NOT mean the can't see one. When did we think we became so much more intelligent than the rest of the world? Do you REALLY in the final analysis think that anyone over the age of 12 thought he walked up and actually levitated a complete stranger? Let me help you. NO! Why do you think the big magic shows have vanished from network TV? TOO BIG! At first the LACK of big was what propelled David Blaine to stardome! Then poof gone. People are smarter than we think. Lets start treating them with the respect we think we deserve. Maybe if we stop insulting their intelligence, perhaps we can be taken more seriously as an art form.

The bottom line is that when Criss Angel does magic on TV, he is performing for laymen not magicians, and he is responsible for getting laypeople to watch his show as they are the majority of the audience, and even though entertaining magicians may mean doing pure magic that relies on amazing slight of hand, lay people just want to be entertained.
Just my take on it. Cody |

Yes, laymen want to be entertained, but I don't think they want to see camera tricks. If they realise that one effect is a camera trick, they will probably start to think they all are.
When performing on tv, camera tricks aint needed. There are millions of effects that can be perfromed. Paul Daniels was on TV for something like 20 years, and as far as I know he never used any. I actually do like Angel, and Blaine. I just don't like camera tricks on tv magic show. I think Blaines next show will be interesting if he actaully does any magic on this one. I wonder if he will do any camera tricks as a way to out do what Angel has done since. |
