The vast majority of the time I do mentalism it's mainly PKMB. I have a leather shave kit bag that I bring the silverware in, with a side pocket for keys. The note pads just slip into my coat pocket, pens in the breast pocket. Those of you doing PKMB I realy recomnend a shave kit bag, works great, expecially if you carry silverware with your other props and keeps them from wrecking your other props. Of course, I mainly do PKMB so I may be carrying a few more forks than most.

Like Sven, I use an upright samlpe case. I use a small table. A chair is placed behind the table facing backward. The case is placed on the chair.
For small intimate venues, I use a "Memory Box" from the Bombay Company (found in many malls here in the states). It looks like a large wooden book and is around $60. I lined mine in felt and placed dividers as I need them. Caveat: empty, it is a bit heavy, but does look impressive. I always intended to go down to my hobby shop, buy some servos and make it open on command (remote control), but never got around to doing so. I use a slimline briefcase. I find that it holds the books, A5/A4 clip boards for pre-show, and the playing card decks I use for Chronologue and the Cassidy Card Memory effect rather well. Three Jumbo cards for Chronologue, several marking pens, golf pencils and the news paper clippings I use for "snippit" as well as sealed predictions complete the storage.
I carry a few CT pads as well. If I am doing a show/numerology reading, the self made numerology/Chinese numerology tick sheet, A4/A5 size, pad I use fits rather well also. There's even room for a standard sign holder to fit as well. |

I ask the question because I love the idea of having an open briefcase there to do dirty work behind it... With a doctor;s bag or an attache case you don't really have the freedom to move in there... I don't know what to do..my books and props are becoming all ugly and worn... (maybe that's a good thing)

Onstage everything comes and goes from my pockets. For travel, nothing beats a steel toolbox lined with rubber pads. Mine is a barn-shaped carpenter's toolbox with compartments in the lid that fold out when you open the box. It's heavy-duty; protects my equipment wonderfully and even has padlock latches for air travel. Price-$32 at Builder's Square. Perfect.

I use a catalog case as sold in Office Depot or Staples. It seems to be the right size for slates (yes some still use them), pads, etc. There is actually room within the bag to dump a NW, etc.

A laptop case, a briefcase, or my pockets, depending on the show.

I have reduced the size to a minimum and now use just a black toiletry kit available anywhere. And I have been trying to move to tricks that fit in in my pockets, period. Over the years I have used lots of larger containers. Once though I used a canvas money bag, which I thought was clever and interesting, but this turned out to have been a poor choice inasmuch as I left it near the back window of my car from which location it was promptly stolen, no doubt by someone who thought it was filled with cash.

Carry props to the gig in an upright black leather bag but usually keep it out of sight during performance and just work from pockets. As others have mentioned a mentalist's act should use the minimum props necessary and even when they are used the routining should dim the awareness of the props and focus on the interaction of the people. Occassionally I need the case in reach for a larger prop.
Cheers, Al
