Obviously we're still not in the age when computer animation is in 3D, but that age is not too far off. What effect will this have on stage and close-up magic when it does come?
As with electronic music and live music, people will always want to see live performers doing magic, but what does our Magic Café community think about this coming technology? Dai Bato |

What do you mean by this? Almost all computer animation is done in 3D. 3D animation is a hobby of mine. I don't see how it would affect magic in any way. Could you please rephrase your post? Shane Wiker |

Shane, it's not true 3D. That is years off. Holograms as a wide spread media are not viable yet.
As for the future of magic, I think magic will do fine. Television didn't replace radio (as predicted), movies didn't replace theater (as predicted), and computers haven't replaced the human mind.

Ahh, I understand. I thought he was talking about 3d computer animation, such as Shrek, Shark Tales, Finding Nemo, etc.
I didn't realize he meant holograms. Shane Wiker |

The holograms I've seen are pretty though hardly realistic. I mean how many times have you seen real objects illuminated ONLY by the scattered light of a single laser?

Shane,
I didn't mean to suggest that holograms would be the next 3D wave, only that they are true 3D (You can look around items that block your view). Jonathan, I don't know if you've seen the high end holograms, but while monochromatic they are unbelievable. The cheap stuff you see mass produced in stores don't do real holograms justice. Part of the problem is that they use white light (dirty-not in phase and multiple frequencies) to reconstruct the image and it just doesn't do a good job.

I'm sorry if I wasn't clear; I meant holograms.
