Hi. Last night I went with my dad (Because they don't let people under 18 in unless they are with an adult) to see the movie Hostel. I have heard some people say they didn't like it, and others say it sucked and so on. But, I am a huge movie buff, and let me tell you, throught the thousands of movies I have seen, this was so far my favorite. Now obviously people have different tastes, but for people who like horror movies, this is the one! It isn't very scary, a few people might have sleepless nights, but it isn't really that bad. But, it is very disturbing. You may even get sick to your stomach. The girl beside us kept turning around to her boyfriend and hiding her face in his jacket. It is restricted for some good reasons. One, there is ALOT of nudity, nothing that a ten year old cant handle, but there is a lot of sexuality which is the problem. Two, there is a lot of drugs and prostitution. And three, it is plain disgusting, and gory. But still, I found it good. Now, some people may wonder why someone could find a movie such as this "good". Well, here is why I liked it:
It was very suspensful, and scary. You were always on the edge of your seat. It was funny. Although its a horror movie, the begginning is funny. And even some of the parts that were scary, had something called "comic relief". Authours use this in storys when there is high tension. This is what they did in some of the stressful scenes in the movie. And, at the end, the one guy who survives, REALLY gets one of the tortures back. I don't want to give anything away. But when I say he really gets them back, I mean He REALLY gets them back. He even gets the hookers that brought him into it back. The story line is very good. And I promise you wont be dissappointed. So, I give it a 10/10. I never even heard of the actors in this movie, but it was good. If you like horror movies, or even if you don't care for them, but don't find them too scary, see this! However, this is not for the faint of heart. Anyway, tell me what you thought about it. Or, if you have any questions about it before you see it, just ask here. -Cory. |

By the way, when the guy was kicking the other guys butt (The guy who survived was killing one of the torturers) Everyone in the theater was hooting and hollering. You could definatley teel they enjoyed seeing that sick SOB getting tortured himself.

You should have warned of spoilers in your topic because you basically just gave away the ending. SO it's a good think I didn't read this until AFTER I saw the movie, (which I just returned from).
It was awesome. Go see it (unless you are squeamish). |

Hi:
Sorry to say I don't share your enthusiasum. I saw it with my two stepdaughters (19 and 16 years) and we all thought it was bad...VERY bad. Definitely a movie made to entertain and scare young teenagers. Ron |

Have not seen it yet but I find anything that has Quentin Tarantino's name on it cannot be Bad.

There are some parts which are very typical Tarantino style. AND DID YOU NOTICE WHAT WAS ON THE TV AT THE HOSTLE?! That made me laugh, a lot.

I really thought the movie was great as well. I am another Tarantino fan and thought as bizarre as the movie was it was entertaining. I think also what made the movie good was the theater that we were in. Everyone was cheering at certain parts laughing and not holding back the emotions. It was almost more fun to watch the expressions and faces around you than the movie itself.
Hoever I would have to say that it is most likely a 1 time movie. I think that the reason it was good the first time was because of the shock factor. I would assume the 2nd time watching it would be less enjoyable because you know whats coming. Where as before you had no idea what to prepare yourself for. I give it *** 1/2. I have decided that Tarantino will never top resevoire dogs. Jared |

Guys, this isn't a Tarantino film... Eli Roth directed it, but Tarantino has the bigger name so he gets his name on it. I love Tarantino, though.
This movie was... okay. Torture and gore doesn't scare me, but it had its moments. |

The girl beside us kept turning around to her boyfriend and hiding her face in his jacket. THAT is the whole idea, you know. It's what we used to call a "drive-in movie" - the guy eats popcorn, laughs, talks ... every now and then the girl hides her face in his chest and needs to be held. Think "Psycho," "Alien," that sort of thing. What more could you want? |

Ross - Hit the nail on the head! Horror films are there to shake us out of our dreary safe modern lives into the arms of another. The idea is that you share your fears with others (both personally and socially) whilst also getting out your aggression.
People are no scared of movies. They are scared of what the represent them for them. And by bringing a chick along you can score! Other great horror films include... - Ring (the original Japanese one is my favourite not that its sequals or remakes don't have their charms) - The Hills Have Eyes (more great revenge) - Halloween 1 and 2 - Scream - Last House On The Left |

I just rented this and thought it was horrible. It was hyped as a scary movie and it turned out to be comedy.
Although I am found of the nude female form, I wasn't impressed with the nudes scenes in this movie. They took up a lot of the movie and were not needed to tell the story. It was almost like watching softcore porn for the first half of the movie. The whole free love thing was a little unbelievable. And that is also part of the problem, about half the movie is all about set-up (as little there really is, stretched out to 40 minutes). I found I could not relate to any of the characters and did not care for them at all. They really didn't have any redeeming qualities. I found that the movie had no mystery. What happened to their friend, and who's involved? Not hard to figure out. You know pretty much as soon as they arrive at the hostle and we are even shown one of the sickos early on. I actually didn't find it that gory. Most of the time, you just heard the sounds as the camera cut away just in time. I never laughed so hard than I did at the eyeball thing with the girl. Looked riduculous. Special effects make-up could've been better. All in all a big disappointment. It was really a classic B Movie (which is fine, if that is what you are expecting.) |

The guy from Iceland was hilarious, though.
"Torture doesn't work" lol
Guess they forgot to tell Bill Buckley. "...as we reason and love, we are able to hope. And hope enables us to resist those things that would enslave us." |

It's about 2 american guys goin' through europe and they're trying to score with some hot chicks. They find this guy who tells them where there's a hostel with some REALLY hot chicks. They go and the rest you have to see for yourself. I liked it quite a bit but the eye scene is pretty fake.

On 2006-01-16 12:01, paisa23 wrote: FOUR ROOM? Writer/director/local boy Eli Roth is one very disturbed person. Not untalented, but totally unfocused. HOSTEL is not, as advertised, a horror film. It is a splatter film, with all the requisite nudity and gore the genre demands. On that level it succeeds, but don’t go looking for a real plot, any acting or even a hint at any social commentary. All Roth gives you is unlikable characters, naked women and lots and lots of blood. Reportedly three times the amount of fake blood was used on HOSTEL than Roth used on his earlier splatter film, CABIN FEVER. There is nothing wrong with a good splatter film every now and then, but to hear Roth tell it, he’d made the CITIZEN KANE of gore. Obviously Roth has picked up his buddy Quentin Tarantino’s knack for shameless self-aggrandizement, but HOSTEL does show flashes of promise (the street kids and the American businessman both could have made a much more interesting movie if they had been elevated beyond minor roles), but the characters Roth chose to highlight were so unlikable, we were left with no one to root for. By film’s end it really didn’t matter who lived or died. HOSTEL is not a date film, unless you are seeing Courtney Love, but this will definitely be a hit with the Chino and baseball cap crowd, and; if they can pay attention for 95 minutes, the criminally insane. In other words, I liked it. You have been warned
